Don't you remember he brought a gun to court with the intent to kill before this. The scene where he is asked to execute someone is where he finally solidifies his own rule about killing. Even ignoring that, learning to fight and possibly kill is important when dealing with his pressure situations. If you understand how to fight and practice you can keep calmer when someone is actually trying to kill you. It's like cops who learn to shoot but never end up shooting anyone anyway.
Guess you could make an american cop joke out of that. Either way, if you actually paid attention to the movie you'd understand this scene and bruce committing to not killing a little later on when he is being forced to by the clan and I'm kinda sad no one pointed that out yet.
