Why would they when it was just growing exponentially with no signs of slowing or getting to the point? Their list of characters was enormous and most were completely worthless with no clue to where arcs were heading. They gave GRRM the benefit of the doubt with Dorne, then got around to adapting it and he left them high and dry so they wasted a bunch of time and money on it for no reason.
