Pic related is from a sinkhole and a road, but it's a good illustration regardless. Modern US homes are kind of similar, but they aren't made cheaply/efficiently for any reason other than greed. Large swathes of Tornado Alley end up getting rebuilt constantly.
Only large buildings are built to truly resist major earthquakes, both the US and Japan utilize those techniques.
