Just how bad is it?
I think PTA will never direct again after this humiliation, it's for the better probably, Licorice Pizza was quirk chungus boomer nostalgia overload, unwatchable, one of the worst films I have ever seen.

PTA just doesn't have it in him anymore. His last worthwhile movie was Inherent Vice, well over 10 years ago.

Licorice just proved that hes attrocious with a camera in his hand. I mean, he is truly clueless. One Battle is just as bad, judging by the trailers, but just give him a decent cinematographer, and there's chance for him. The problem is that he's very stubborn about it. One of those auters that will do his thing, despite people telling him that it's bad.

I cannot rest until I find out what the suits at WB were thinking when they gave Paul Thomas Anderson -- a director whose biggest runaway success made only ~80mil worldwide and whose most films break even just barely on budgets of ~30mil -- one hundred to one hundred forty million (by different estimates). I cannot but picture them as picrel, but even stupider

WB is the most batshit studio in the business. Superman is a huge bomb (costs for the movie on all aspects is well over 500 million) and yet the movie will barely cap at 600 million. For fuck's sake, that's Joker 2 level bomb. And Zazlav came out and pretended it was some huge success. WB is in the worst shape of its existence right now.

>programmed to underestimate middle America
We've degenerated so far in 20 years that now middle America isn't even looked down on. They're ignored entirely and seen as a nonfactor when talking about TV and film audiences.

Same. It has an ugly quality about it. I don't care if it's intentional or not. It's like a piece of shit expects me to gaze it. I won't.

Premiering your expensive movie at a prestegious festival can backfire unless you know you're going to get good buzz, and then maybe the movie gets its general release only a few days later. Look at what happened with Dial of Destiny a couple years ago where it premiered at Cannes to a muted response and then didn't actually get released to the public until an entire month or so later, by the time it came out there was no hype at all.

Dial of Destiny is franchise slop, PTA is art movie stuff, if it isn't premiering at a festival it's almost guaranteed to be horrid

WB has basically admitted that the only reason PTA got that budget was because he locked-in Leonardo diCaprio is the lead. Just goes to show how important your lead actor can still be.

>PTA is art movie stuff
Not with $140 million budget it isn't. There's evidence that this movie has already had several test screenings as well, so obviously it isn't just some "art project" for PTA and WB.

Megalopolis cost 100 million, so what. They just dumped money into PTA hoping to invest into prestige but he fucked up.
If you're wondering what the film is - it's a Vineland adaptation but the time period is moved further to now, so instead of Reagan-era it's either Bush-era or Trump first term. Maybe Obama if PTA tried to be "edgy". A Pynchon adaptation cannot be anything but an art movie.

the budget is probably inflated like all of them.

the thing you have to understand is that no executive is willing to make decisions based on assessing the quality of a script, because that makes them more personally responsible for a film's failure. that's why WB had to specifically hire James Gunn to do that for them.

Yes but FFC funded the movie out of his own pocket. He didn't have to answer to anyone.

Leo alone would have been paid $20 million. Look at Joker 2 where Todd Phillips, Joquain and Lady Gaga got paid a total of $52 million dollars up-front, before the movie even began photography. Not hard to blow cash on these big studio movies if everybody's getting paid well.
