Hereditary has always been his one hit wonder. Each movie since has gotten progressively worse. This time I think it will really start to hurt him because Eddington is bound to piss off the Letterboxd crowd that identifies with the young white protestors in the movie.

does it actually say anything profound/is there some interesting subversion (like everyone acting crazy but the ending twist is that its not about the coronavirus but about a zombie outbreak so everyone going crazy is retroactively justified)?

if all the film says is "boy 2020 sure was crazy and both sides were stupid" a la south park, then i dont know how worthwhile it is

the Bryne-Collette troubled marriage is really gud. Her psychotic break takes a surrealist turn, just so Gayster can show rows of ass in a long shot. Yes it's a ridic cult worshipping some demon that outsiders can't comprehend. A "metaphor" for why a family stay together when they're ruled by the demon of matriarch's mental illness.

It all goes so downhill in terms of coherent messaging after he gets slapped by Pedro. I know it was intentional because the intention is to subvert the first third's messaging and make people feel hopeless. Cross stops nothing, and all the feigning of agendas by the mother in law, while all one hundred percent correct, is surface level because the agenda trudges on regardless, and actually incorporates cross as a lackey abettor, although unwillingly. The child trafficking angle was purposely conflated with gematria to disredit the uniparty ritualism exposed by Zachary K Hubbard. It's such tactful subversion, I have to give Ari credit even if people like me and you are the ones being openly mocked and made to feel powerless. The datacenters are 1 to 1 project stargate and all of the power they will require.
>The ending made little sense either.
To me, the messaging was showing how once you become a bur in the side of the powers that be, they will create pretense to fold you into the stewardship, albeit with zero agency. Baeu is afraid tackles similar themes.
>it's woke or something
Talk about the film without using binary and reactionary buzzwords. It's not a film devoid of nuance, it's full of it. I say this while also not feeling the messaging is anything but a blatant mockery for those with eyes to see and enough of an uncomfortable and jarring watch to push it down in the memory of anyone who just consoomed the media. It figures no one is talking about the film. There is only one thread on the board to discuss it. I hope it picks up steam just to dissect the demoralizing aspects..

I don't need his maze pretending to be some revelation of the method. he engages the public only as a mesmerist on behalf of TPTB, talking down to the public while pretending (at cannes) that he wants to be the olive branch for ~both sides. he brings nothing to the people's survival (which takes time + energy he's not entitled to as an energy vampire), just smarmy noise.

Well, maybe I agree after all and should just say enough of the ritualistic humiliation through the false veneer of le high art and put this one to bed. I guess I become frustrated when I just see it shuffled off to the side after no discussion when it's films like this that simply muddy the water for the few of the masses that sat through it as well as act as a pressure release valve for certain subconscious felling they otherwise have compartmentalized under layers and layers of disassociation from reality. Thanks for making me feel a little less alone because that's all I felt after the credits rolled. Truly pathetic, Ari. Some of us see through your shell game.

These replies are indicative of anything involving the pressure release valve of the current zeitgeist being completely ignored in favor of reactionary, fleeting media nonsense. The second Cross goes from heartfelt and reasonable, even if you disagree on COVID, to American Psycho tier mania, it's clear this is a pathetic whitewash of any genuine and warranted dissent of the status quo foisted on everyone since 2020.

Never heard of it. Hairy Asshole is a hack who writes garbage, though, so I assume the movie sucks. Apparently this movie has something to do with Duh Vaxโ„ข according to everyone else in this thread so it is automatically steaming dog shit on a hot sidewalk. This nigga should kill himself for putting out so much worthless garbage. Hereditary was such a pointlessly demoralizing movie that it should be considered an act of self harm to purposely watch it because there is nothing positive at all you can take away from the film, a truly jewish piece of media if I've ever seen one. Midsommar was the single most shamelessly pseudo intellectual thing I have ever had the displeasure of experiencing, and I have absolutely no interest in subjecting myself to anything else this freak wants to inflict upon the world. he's wrapped up in this nightmare of committing horrific deeds and he's in a panic trying to cover his tracks yet he now has the fucking annoying cough and those mobile phone alerts saying "your results are ready to view" etc.
I found it hilarious during the surreal shootout that he is also weary from just an annoying flu. I caught COVID early on in the pandemic and it was like a bad flu. It was a real thing that people did get sick from, including it as an annoyance during Joe's spiral of personal desperation was like Seinfeld humor in the middle of an R-rated movie.

I loved it. A little long though, and I don't even mean overstuffed, just a slight bit of cutting on the artsy long-shots would've made this feels snappier and wittier, I always think of "The Departed", go watch that movie today, the editing is so snappy and almost cutting out of scenes too fast, it keeps the movie at the perfect pacing and it was a huge smash at the time. Like the scene where they investigate the cop car and they're all standing there, you needed one good shot of the black cop and then MOVE THE SCENE ON we get it. Still excellent movie though.
I loved the main theme of knee-jerk reactions. It's using real political discomfort to distract from the obvious underlying story (the data center being built) in the same way that real life politics is used to distract us all from the obvious underlying movements (any power grabs from any side, mostly the rich and connected).
All the bad things that happen are the result of making a choice based on bad info, or making a choice too quickly based on emotion or desire.

>I loved the main theme of knee-jerk reactions. It's using real political discomfort to distract from the obvious underlying story (the data center being built) in the same way that real life politics is used to distract us all from the obvious underlying movements (any power grabs from any side, mostly the rich and connected).
I agree with most of the sentiment behind this, it tackled the binary reactionary tendencies very succinctly, but how with a straight face can you say COVID was just part of the reactionary discourse when it was the foundation for the AI surveillance state? I am not trying a gotcha, just wondering if others did not see the blatant contradictions... again all of the Q angle I thought was tactful and really great criticism, but not all of the COVID push-back i can be defined as "right-leaning" or alt-right.

Regardless, I agree it was at lest unique enough to be championed over the glut filler content. Even if I often disagree with the demoralizing quality of Ari's work, I will always look forward to his latest project since it's at least created with intention.

I appreciate voices like you keeping me from getting too meek though, I don't wanna be like "look this is as good as we get anymore" lol but also if Aster did pull some punches or just realize near the end of production he wanted to lean heavier left or right in places, who knows, but this might be the perfect movie (heavy concepts, ultimately a lot of broad humor and self-indulgence smoothed into the more careful, nuanced scenes and themes... which is what Kubrick used to do!) to open a few doors in other artists' minds, get the more incendiary people making noise. I would be interested in seeing Lars Von Trier make an openly "modern" movie directly tackling specific politics, just for that strangeness and unique flavor.

Yeah, in this age of fleeting media, it really is difficult to toe the line between cheer-leading bold takes or being solely critical because it's not true to a viewers personal vision/desires for the project.

I have felt this since I watched Beau. He really has a tact for gentile disclosure, although still prickly and manic enough to be off-putting to most audiences looking to just sit back and watch without much digesting. As you said, in a year, maybe I will have a plethora of more uplifting things to say upon more reflection, but this is my still fresh frustration from having seen it yesterday.

I'll pay money to see any of his movies as blind as possible, I dig what he's doing. Part of why I might have the favorable glow of feelings from seeing this a few days ago is that I successfully avoided 95% of the marketing and teasers, the only thing I found diminished a little was the big M60 scene, I wish I hadn't of seen that frame in the teaser so I wouldn't have seen that, what a great gag to come out of a rifle shop with a 'Nam machine gun fully blasting.

Hereditary came at the early stages of A24's successful bait & switch marketing campaigns for their horror films. The trailers made the films look like mainstream horror, normies flocked to them and then were disappointed. Hereditary's CinemaScore was D+, The Witch had C- and It Comes at Night got D.

I think normies have caught on now. See: Bring Her Back only making $23 million against $15 million (plus marketing costs). If they see the A24 logo on a horror film, they immediately assume that it will be trauma drama slop with minimal horror.

I think the issue with BHB was how grotesque the violence actually is. Seeing a young boy chewing on a kitchen knife and fucking up his lips and teeth for 30-seconds is not exactly something the vast majority of people want to see or find entertaining. The actual violence in the movie is actually quite grounded and "realistic" compared to most horror movies, to its detriment.

Normies didn't know that about the film when making a decision whether to see it or not. Only A24 and horror diehards saw BHB. That's why the CinemaScore was as high as it was (B+)

If normies had gone to BHB, the CinemaScore would have been in the F territory.

This was a nice dialog to read between you two. Pretty rare to see on this board.

It's not the fatigue, but Aster just doubles down on the fatigue with crazy theories of his own disguised as fictional snark. He never uses fiction to point out the source of the fatigue is from big govt & a captured media blitz trying to exhaust people into pandemic policies that benefit only the 1% and lackeys. Aster prevents criticizing the ruling elite with the circus.

agree that the film is focused a bit too much on the underclass, but do you not think that the film is ultimately about how the ruling class has the final say? isn't that what the epilogue sequence kind of shows? and the guy who makes it the most in the movie is brian, who is underhanded, he's an opportunist, he's insincere. he has all the traits that the modern bourgeois have, and he's rewarded handsomely for it. i think the movie does have an anti-ruling class angle but it is only shown at the end.

So are we assuming that Michael Cooke cant talk after the explosion? Or is he just being bribed into not saying anything?

Can't he expose alot after what he went thru?
