Gundam is funny to just discover now because its like Japans star wars, and that means its iconic to them but not to you so you see it in this totally disjointed way.

If you watch the origin without growing up with Char being a Darth Vader level icon its like...why did they make a series about a guy who was just born perfectly cool and the best at everything, who is seemingly never in any danger cause he's so on top of shit- and not for any reason, he had a very cozy, non strenuous upbringing at first. He was like this out of the womb. That is not what you're really meant to do.

Then Japan is kind of luke warm on a lot of gundam stuff that does common sense writing stuff you're supposed to do. Iron Blooded Orphans goes out of its way to set things up competently and follow normal writing advice and make you give a shit without appealing to anything outside that show, not being able to just rely on nostalgia and cultural context. And it wasn't unsuccessful but this actual coherent, consistently high effort, regular story will never have the same cultural purchase as the original series through Char's Counterattack with all its jank and awkward dialogue and bizzare decisions does.

Is the show Victory Gundam worth the watch between Unicorn and TurnA? The movie CCA left me empty and wanting, but Unicorn only barely scratched that itch.

People avoid ZZ for lack of a good dub and have a hard time accepting villains like Chara Soon and Mashmrye, who are supposed to be warped individuals, yet by Africa, ZZ was hitting all the same highs as Zeta and then some, Especially in the merging sequences. Will Unicorn have the same 'wow' factor? I know the lead newtypes so far were children, but I want a UC shows that handles itself seriously and with respect.

Already watched them. Only made me want to rewatch the shows themselves. Just not sure if Victory is worth the investment or if one should just jump straight to TurnA after Unicorn. As for Char's fucking problem, he's a man of action. He's rich, is of the right bloodline to rule, and has pull with both Zeon remnants and Federation. He understands first-hand the hypocricy of both sides in the wars. A nuclear winter was a last ditch effort to save the earth, and how else but to drop Axis into it.

This is legit one of the best write ups of Gundam ever. Zeta is so far and away more ambitious than any Star Wars sequels post OT. They make Amuro a PSTD ridden mess, Char a failure in a lot of regards with a broken personal life and change a main character towards a emasculated raging sperg. He wanted to carry on his fathers ideals that humanity was destined to grow beyond needing Earth(Newtypes are the personification of this ideal) but the events of 079 and Zeta blackpilled him over time. He eventually lost hope that humanity could grow unless forced.
It's not outright stated but I believe losing Kamille played a big role in it as he was the exact kind of next generation he wanted to see lead humanity into the future.

I liked Victory. I think it starts off a little weak (and kind of confusing because the first episode is actually supposed to be like the 4th episode chronologically because that's the first time a Gundam appears on-screen and they obviously mandated the presence of a Gundam in the first episode) but I think it improves a lot as it goes on.

Unicorn is worth it for the spectacle more than the story. The visuals, fights and music are all really good and the sheer variety of mobile suits that get a moment in the spotlight. The story and characters aren't "bad" it just not as strong as the Tomino works of something like 0080.

Char is the best, charismatic retard who lucked into power.

Him dying with that statement about Lalah to Amuro's complete bewilderment is the best end for both of them.

It has those things, but only so much as you can expect from grunts on the front line. The people in their ivory towers only get token screen time to establish the setting. The spinoffs are more in depth about that kind of thing, but you still need to watch the original show for a proper frame of reference.
