It's kind of dumb though. They planted their gear here millions of years ago but didn't know dick all about the planet? i get that life had changed over those years but they didn't bother doing any fucking research or taking any precautions? Presumably this happens on other planets, or if you want earth for some unique characteristics you're probably expecting some life supporting traits. Do they breathe air? Wouldn't their ships be sealed completely if they didn't breathe air? How would the bacteria get in? The machines themselves had been there for millions of years and didn't seem to have been degraded at all. I like the movie okay but shit was legit kind of stupid

In the book they get sick because they keep injecting human blood into themselves. There's a whole thing in the book where the Martians have evolved to be more "efficient" by doing away with the digestive system and just inject the already digested nutrient filled blood of other races directly into their own bloodstream. They brought along a race of ten foot tall albino people as a blood source for the trip to earth (they unfortunately were too spindly to survive in earths gravity). For some reason the movie kept the whole thing where they were draining peoples blood but not where they were injecting it into themselves. Maybe because they thought "Getting sick from blood transfusions" would make an unintentional AIDS metaphor?

You would think that someone would have excavated one of these machines at some point during an infrastructure project but I guess not. They ran around all through weird Tim Robbins' house without space suits but knew fuck all about the bacteria that would kill them a day or so later.
