true love is about developing a deep connection and giving yourself to each other.
the initial spark is a fleeting thing, and it's not really the same. if you end up in a relationship with the person you have a crush on the fantasy dies really fast, you'll have to face the reality of whoever you're with.

She had a schoolgirl crush on Griffith because he saved her, gave her a home and embodied all the virtues she looked up to. She did love him, and probably would have been happy as his lover/wife but he just saw her as a tool and they could never be equals. Her true love was obviously Guts. It's too bad the author was busy jerking off to anime little girl feet to finish his life's work.
