Do you think there's a real purpose to them apart from entertainment? Actually enriching your life?

They are a modern form of education and society formation which makes them really important. They have completely replaced the theater, books, and magazines in their social roles.

I think they have a bigger influence on lives than most people think. Good AND bad. Some people are also more susceptible so the media they consume can actually really change them.

Itโ€™s important to remember that life isnโ€™t cinematic.

More important than not important at all. But not that important. Sort of important, but mainly because humans make sense of the world through narratives, and understanding different narratives helps you understand the world better. I guess. I dunno.

I think they can be enriching, but the vast majority simply aren't. I think stage plays and live music have given me significantly more than movies and TV shows ever could, because of the human aspect and ephemerality of a live performance. A movie has to be something genuinely special to provide that same kind of enrichment. Pic related, watching a video of a band live is just nowhere near the same as seeing them in person.

I think it's different for everybody, depending on what they've experienced and what period of life they're in. Something that's enriching for a young person would likely be meaningless for someone middle-aged, and vice versa. I would say that Enter the Void was enriching for me in my early 20's, but it's really not a very good movie to me now. Lord of the Rings movies were very enriching as a young teenager, and I still think they're good, but they don't give me the same thing they did as a kid. Some people see Eraserhead and it really resonates with them, and I've tried watching that movie several times and it just does nothing for me.
Enrichment is incredibly subjective, which is why no matter which movies I mention somebody's gonna call me a retarded faggot for it.
