Superman gave Zod multiple chances to back down and Zod refused. Putting him down like a dog was the right thing to do and it's something someone raised in Kansas like Superman would have done. He was more than reasonable in how he dealt with Zod. Superman will kill if needed, he just doesn't like it or take any joy in it and anyone bitching about not killing criminals needs to go back to Gotham.
