You see, the unit putting together the VFX shots only had the storyboard drawing of Superman hovering over and protecting the girl from the debris (the gas canisters were probably just a random choice by the storyboard artist) to go on when setting up and shooting these plates. It didn't have to make sense, it just had to be done and tossed in the queue for rendering by a specific date.
