Paul Dano in the new movie about Putin (played by Jude Law). Thoughts?

As a non-Russian Russian-speaker who's moderately immersed in this shit (certainly more than your average /pol/tard), the film's probably going to be a cringe-fest in terms of its portrayals and politics. I am very interested in seeing Law as Putin though.

No. Dano playing "not Surkov" some composite character that is clearly Vladislav Surkov who was Putin's first Chief of Staff. Supposedly credited as the guy who proposed to oligarchs and Yeltsin for Putin to be his replacement.

Assayas was born in Paris, France, the son of French director/screenwriter Raymond Assayas, alias Jacques Rémy, and Catherine de Károlyi, a fashion designer. His father was of Turkish-Jewish origin

He met actress-director Mia Hansen-Løve when Hansen-Løve, 17 at the time, starred in Assayas's 1998 feature Late August, Early September. He has said they "didn't get together until [she] was 20".[6] They separated in 2017.[7]

In 2009 and 2010, Assayas signed two petitions in support of director Roman Polanski, who had been detained in Switzerland while traveling to a film festival in relation to his 1977 sexual abuse charges in the United States and had long been in exile from the U.S. The first petition argued that the detention would undermine the tradition of film festivals as a place for works to be shown "freely and safely". It said that arresting filmmakers traveling to neutral countries could open the door "for actions of which no-one can know the effects".[8][9][10][11][12]

Nothing dramatic. He transitioned to being a Putin aide but then, like a typical Russian politician, stole too much, got fired, then paid off his supposed charges and retired. Which is why I think they will replace him with a fictional character so that something dramatic can happen to him.
Also, his last public statements before being sacked in 2020 is something to the effect of "There is no such thing as Ukriane, there are only hohols" so I don't know. I think it would be difficult to craft a sympathetic figure for the Western viewer out of him.

> The main character of the plot, Vadim Baranov, is fictional, but he shares many common traits with Russian politician Vladislav Surkov, whose atypical profile—rap lover, avant-garde theater director, writer and businessman—prompted The New York Times to call him one of Russia's “most intriguing figures.”[2][3] Like Baranov, Surkov was Vladimir Putin's man in the shadows, "a poet among wolves", according to Marianne.[4]

I don't think it's an Anglo fault specifically, I just think that in order to do a competent political/social film you have to come from the same environment that you're depicting. There are ofc exceptions to this (e.g. Death of Stalin is good-to-great), but most of the time it doesn't work as well because you're an outsider depicting events which you're not privy to and have virtually no understanding of.
>>212985215
In Russian political life there's a very specific archetype of what they call a "polit-technologue". It's a mix between a political scientist and strategist, but has a much more nefarious and wily connotation. Now around the time Putin was designated successor (first FSB director, then prime minister), he was a complete non-entity and nobody outside of St. Petersburg knew who the fuck he was. A number of polit-technologues over the next years developed his image from the ground up and Dano is playing their composite. He seems to be based mostly off Surkov, who's a pretty interesting and important figure, but it's one has to remember that Surkov wasn't some lone warrior-poet eminence grise who marionetted everything himself (which seems to be his image in the West, one I'm sure he's stoked himself).
>>212985382

Pretty much what this dude >>212986066 says. The consensus is that he was in charge of the "Ukraine strategies" department, stole too much while doing too little, fed Putin the notions that ideologically everything was secure on that front and that the moment Russian tanks roll through the border the political elite will fold and the people will welcome their Russian liberators. This is a key reason why Putin started the war and when this was revealed to be a sham he was understandably mad with Surkov, who got promptly shuffled away
