Mel Gibson is one of the most talented people in Hollywood and yes Apocalypto is elite kino. It's amazing that this film was even able to be made. Would likely never happen today.

I've studied precolumbian america and I've never seen this film out of sheer prejudice on my part. Is it worth it? Is it historic accurately? Everytime I see a Hollywood production of an ancient/foreign culture, there is always a typical hero figure shouting for freedom like he is on a NY rally or something.

From my understanding it's woefully inaccurate in terms of pre Columbian architecture and culture, creating a kind of mish-mash of Aztec and Maya city dwellers vs jungle tribes. It is not a documentary in the slightest, nor is it a realistic depiction of the collapse of a society. It's really more biblical, IMO, feeling like an old testament story about a man enduring unimaginable horrors to reunite with his family/tribe.
All that said, it's a great film. Costuming is beautiful, the cast is great, the entire film's "vibe" is really compelling. It's less a historical story and more a symbolic one using Mesoamerican aesthetics as a canvas for portraying societal corruption and doom.

I didn't care for apocalypto, it was well made though but I didn't really like it. You know what I'm saying?

It hard slams mayans and aztecs together. Aesthetically Mayan in that they are in the jungle and wear mayan style clothing and speak a mayan language.
This mayan civilization is on the very precipice of collapse. Their is visible famine and disease and the elites are corrupt.

The cultural practices depicted are very aztec. Raiding small neighbors for slaves and human sacrifice. The nature of the sacrifices (pulling out the heart) and the scale (masses of dead bodies) are distinctly aztec.
