>“There are things on that videotape that shouldn’t be there…”
>Keita has a past marked by the disappearance of his younger brother, with whom he went out long ago. Now, he continues to volunteer in search of missing persons. One day, he suddenly receives an old videotape from his mother. It captures the moment his brother, Hinata, disappears. His housemate, Tsukasa, who possesses spiritual sensitivity, senses a sinister atmosphere from the tape and warns Keita not to delve too deeply. However, Keita begins to pursue the disturbing past that has haunted him. Accompanying him is Mikoto, a journalist who has been following his story, as the three head toward the “mountain” where Hinata vanished…

Why is it that in every fucking jap supernatural story (film, video game, manga, whatever) the protagonist happens to know or meet someone who's sensitive to ghosts?

I don't know if there is an answer for that, but japanse are very autistic about everything, they need someone to say that it is something spoopy and not bullshit in their heads.

It was pretty underwhelming and dull.
The ending was pretty shit and emotionally flat, but I guess this is some low budget, indie film and the directors first film, so meh.

>sensitive to ghosts
Japanese are pretty scared of evil ghosts more than any other kind of monster/alien/entity. Everything else will be seem as kinda dumb, like how Freddy Krueger is just a guy in a rubber mask, but for them ghosts are legit real life evil you shouldn't speak out loud or they will perceive you and attach to your life. Same for cursed objects/places/curses but those also always involve a ghost in some form.

For why there is always the need for a psych guy to point that out it's pretty easy, ghots are invisible, otherwise those baka japs would go on with daily lives just saying "oh no, I'm late to school again!" while running with a piece of toast in their mouths.

I asked GPT (why not), and it mostly said it's a trope that helps to build tension, to explain what is happening, to create a connection between the two worlds etc. but what I think it got right is this:

>A Cultural Respect for the Supernatural
>In Japan, ghost stories (kaidan) often carry moral or spiritual lessons, and treating spirits with respect is important. The spiritually sensitive character often embodies traditional respect or awareness that's lacking in others, who might be skeptical or disrespectful.

It does make sense, the sensitive character always says "this happened because someone fucked up some tradition, the only way to make things right is to do X and Y" and the ending depends on how the MC does the things which leads to another trope, the false ending where everybody thinks things are fine now because they did the proper rituals but then they discover they forgot one little thing and the ghost comes back in full force to make more victims.

from what I've read online Jap people are way more into ghosts and the supernatural than you'd think, people that are into occult shit would be more common there.

I love when movies do this, no matter how cheap or nonsensical the twist is. Drag Me To Hell was great for that.

Noroi is probably the best found footage outside Blair Witch I've ever seen. Other movies by the same guy are ok, I would recommend Occult if you endup liking Noroi.

If you liked One Cut of the Dead you may like Why Don't You Play in Hell?, not horror but there is plenty of gore and is hella fun.

I don't know what else to recommend. J-horror has great atmosphere but the wooden acting, shitty budget and dumb scripts endup fucking any value they could have. That's why people still praise Ringu and Pulse after all these years.

Thanks, gonna check. I also remembered another one, the Banshee Chapter. Not exact found footage, more like a horror mockumentary about some MK Ultra experiments, it got Ted Levine playing a character inspired by Hunter S. Thompson, it's pretty interesting.
