Try to sell fake ecstasy to cover my debt and if that fails hide in a freezer until Rad the Man and Frankee cool off and the bodybuilders go home.

Hypothetically, if Refn stopped being a pretentious faggot and decided to make another Pusher, who should be the main character?

>shows up again for one scene in Pusher 3 solely to get Milo to relapse on heroin
Truly Kusse Kunt was the real Pusher all along and a real human being.

if they tried to revisit this today, it would be from the perspective of some shitskin immigrant like mohammed and turn into some pro-immigration screed about how awful and racist danish people are

refn wouldnt do that, but the movies were low budget and the world looked and felt different back then too, different kinds of drugs different kinds of crime and practices, these movies are from the late 90s early 2000s, the western world ended in 2008, we live in a different universe now.

what you're saying is true, but I also can't stop thinking about the pusher films and the amount of mileage refn got from the way he made the trilogy.
the format he used to tell these stories using different perspectives in the same criminal ecosystem is the perfect form of storytelling to use to craft an informative portrait of a world (worldbuilders take note) while also giving an in depth look at the types of people living in the world.

how many times do you see hack writers get so enamored with their worldbuilding, but all they do is gay and boring exposition with zero characters to populate the world? Refn's pusher movies are like the perfect example of how to accomplish informative world-building while also telling a story that people want to see with real people.

It's crazy going back and watching the Pusher movies after the past decade plus of Refn's current visual style. He could write actual human characters at one point but starting with Only God Forgives he's just slowly whittled down everything else to the point that the only thing he seems interested in in is glacially paced tableaux with neon lighting and 20 second pauses between dialogue.

It's not something fans or outsiders from the industry would understand but when you stumble onto a unique gimmick as a filmmaker, you stick to it because that's all you'll be given funding for. Sucks but Refn knows how the jig works.

He made Pusher 2 and 3 under immense pressure to pay off debts after Fear X bombed.
The phrase 'art from adversity' really applies here. You're often at your best when you're facing the toughest circumstances and have a lot to prove to the world. He also became a dad sometime around Pusher 2 and it gave him some more perspective on how to write characters and sheeit
After the success of Drive, he got all the hollywood clout and prestige he wanted and two things usually happen to a director from here on out..
>you go full blown mcdonald's arthouse and make weird pretentious shit that only appeals to you and you only
>you sell out and make safe summer blockbuster shlock for the masses that are guaranteed to make shitloads of shekels

He obviously went with the former.

I honestly think Pusher 1 & 2, but especially the first; are the best "criminals are pathetic and lame cunts you wouldn't want to be."

I get what you're saying but I feel like the only reason he's gotten funding for stuff like Neon Demon and Too Old to Die Young was solely because Amazon was hoping he'd make something that landed as much as Drive did again. Amazon absolutely buried TOTDY when it released because they realized they had something completely unmarketable with no mass appeal and then he went and made a show almost identical in tone and presentation with Copenhagen Cowboy on Netflix and that got even less attention. He's running out of streaming companies that will write him a blank check to make flops. I actually do like his current visual style but it needs to be tempered in the format of a two hour movie, not these 8-10 hour slow-panning mires that only his most dedicated fans will actually sit through.

really liked the third movie too, because it's one of those movies where the more you think about it, the more you realize just how doomed he is. The final shot with him just staring at the empty pool is brutal and ooozing with subtext.

Drive got by solely by word of mouth because it was not well received on impact. It was only after people picked it apart and let it stew that it gained its reputation. Deservingly so. Go watch Bleeder, it was the first movie of his that was like Drive or OGF.

he seems like he is mentally at a place where he is happy he gets to just make neon arthouse movies/miniseries again and again.
