But seriously what did I think? I’m not movie literate. I felt bad for the main character though setting up Mike like that was irredeemable imo.

how does a movie illiterate person end up watching an Ari Aster movie? Shouldn't you be dressing up and going to watch capeshit?

I like watching good movies, I’m just fundamentally incapable of grasping the “language of film” or whatever so almost everyone time the metaphorical meaning of something gets pointed, it’s news to me. It’s not just the more involved literary devices, like was I supposed to appreciate Bryan’s redemption at the end? Because I did, and everyone interrupting the topic to ask Mike if he was okay the day after the George Floyd stuff was a 10/10 gag

I haven't seen it yet so I can't help you grasp it. But at least you watch real movies, you'll learn to understand them eventually. Rooting for you.

But bad things happened to him to begin with, up until a certain point in the movie he comes off as a decent enough guy whose values are being increasingly and more dramatically challenged by society around him (I acknowledge he shouldn’t have let his personal vendetta get in the way of his job at the start when that homeless dude was harassing the bar). Eventually he does overreact and do stupid shit like air out his wife’s dirty laundry, among other escalations I won’t spoil. But isn’t there some greater meaning to some shit that I’m missing? Or is that the whole point, he just snaps and gets punished for it?

And am I stupid for thinking he didn’t deserve the way his wife - and her mom - had been treating him for what seems like their entire life? He made a huge mistake dragging them into the spotlight but did he, holistically, deserve for her to fuck off and get impregnated by the hippie after decades of patiently dealing with her shit?

The movie is secretly about Peter Thiel.
-Small town conservative rightly opposes AI data center and big business
-Gets distracted by stupid but harmless leftist kids
-AI company poses as antifa and fucks up his life (metaphor for Red Scare/Jan 6)
-Becomes slave for AI techbros to own the libs

-Leaves out that AI/big biz are in bed with federal policy makers (bury the "state corporatism" to push "corporate greed" narrative as IRL)
-not just harmless, leftist kids are the ideal model citizen to feds. Unarmed unless protesting the law (or fake crisis) to compel crackdowns that can be expanded in rule by force.
-Condeding that antifa can be bought/hired/staged, while "p*t front" isn't (this metaphor is too weak when Sorkins + media + feds collaborate in brainwashing that J6 has no genuine participants in sentiment/justifications at all, over the transparency of voting + tabulation protocols.)
-still plying the partisan slugfest like WWF spectacle, as if AI isn't being imposed from the top down by federal funding/contracts to corps.

He and his mother in law have been gaslighting the daughter/wife about her being abused by the father, who was the sheriff when Joe was a deputy.
I don't think the point is that Joe is le bad though.

P.S. Stargate AI was announced 1/'25, Eddington was shot in 3~5/'24. ASTER SHOULD AT LEAST HAVE THE INTEGRITY TO ADMIT HIS PLOT IS GROSSLY LAGGING BEHIND REALITY, OR CAREFULLY AVOIDS TAKING JABS AT THE TOP LEADERSHIP OF THE US + 50 STATES, THAT HE SLINGS TOWARDS THE PLEBS.

See I’m fucking stupid because I took their statements at face value, I didn’t know whether Pedro Pascal was lying about not touching her and generally didn’t know who to believe. I just figured the crime was taking away her adjacency in denying or addressing it

I don’t agree, prior to the events of the movie he’s more of a disenfranchised small town value boomer/gen x’er, he doesn’t even reject technology or the youth in general. Chuds are more resigned and incel’y (Joe is technically an incel but it’s not the same)

It’s a pretty simple karmatic punishment movie, most characters who did something against another get punished
Ted was going to sell out the town for his own profit so he dies
His son was an asshole so he dies
Joe attempted to gaslight his wife, killed Ted and his son, and tried to pin the blame in others so he gets the worst punishment of all
The white sheriff officer distrusted his parter, the black officer, and paid for it
The mother in law seems to get off free since she basically becomes acting mayor, but is in her own hell because she’s now literally invited the sort of conspiracy theories she was against into the town and basically act's as another cog for them
It’s not all exact though, the Indian police officer gets teckt despite being alright as far as we can tell, and the kid who became a podcaster wins big despite not having much in he way of his own opinions and just using them as a way to get laid( though he does technically save a life, what’s left of it) . And of course the tech corp wins despite everything they did. But life is messy like that.

i felt like the worst people won. The woke pandering kid Brian, the Mother and solidgoldmagikarp all benefitted because they didnt actually care about anything. Joe ended up bad but I think he even believed his bullshit for a bit. All of those people get swallowed up. idk

Nothing wrong with Bryan(Brian?) winning, he’s a retarded teen and he learned his lesson about simping, could’ve hid in the car at the end but he didn’t. I think talk show streamers are fags especially the ones who push sports drink mixes but that’s relatively minor on the “worst people in the movie” scale

>Small town conservative rightly opposes AI data center and big business

The problem is Joe had no chance at winning the mayoral election. He ran a garbage campaign and when he tried to run a rape smear campaign his own wife turned against him publically. When Antifa was shown flying over, for all intents and purposes, Ted was still alive and had it in the bag. Ted supported Magikarp. So why were they coming?

There's a wave of radicalization throughout the town, yet Sheriff Joe Cross seemed blase with technology that he didn't hear about George Floyd until the day after, when someone told him

In the end, he’s paralyzed and forced to stare at screens, with traumatic videos of his pregnant ex-wife shoved in his face while he's watching an old movie

same. i can enjoy dull movies with good acting.
she deserved an oscar for that imo but I forget who she was up against. She delivered in every scene, but even just that scream when she learns about the daughter. bone chilling

It makes Joe (the right wing guy) pretty sympathetic and it makes Ted (the left wing guy) out to be a hypocritical douche. And all the BLM/Antifa people are either grifters or young and stupid.
Joe eventually goes off the deep end though.
