single speeds/fixies are often geared well for bumbling around town at ~15mph. the good is theres no other parts to wear out, no shifting. it saves weight but mostly you just don't need gears in flat areas. in the last few years its become popular to take bikes with gears and make them single speed, but half the people that try end up fucking them up because they don't realize that the chainline and everything else changes, so what parts you need to replace ends up not so standard. as a result, probably 1/3 of bikes people try to do that to end up being rideable, the rest just get junked as a project so you can pick them up cheap and finish the job
