>From 1961 to 1995, Alexander Sokurov kept a personal diary, recording both important events and everyday trivia. Now these candid recordings are taking on a new life in a large-scale five-hour documentary, intertwined with footage from iconic films of that era. This is not just the autobiography of a famous director, but a personal look at the history of the second half of the 20th century, full of reflections and observations.

>>213025370I think you also need to take into the account the fact that not that long ago Britan was the most powerful empire in the world and in just about half a century it declined like no other nation in history (despite winning two world wars). And I'm pretty sure his timing of making Shifty is not a coincidence as UK is slowly heading towards their biggest crisis in modern history.
That's why I liked Shifty so much even if his Soviet project had way better source material. It's just such a bleak picture of decline of what was once the most powerful nation. That clip of the last ship (symbol of their dominance of the seas and colonial power in the past) being produced in the UK and workers just standing and watcing it with tears in their eyes is so good.
>>213024444It just gets really old to hear choral music in nature documentaries. As if the juxtaposition of liturgical ritual with the raw elements of the earth is some consecrated self-realization of man. There's not a more kitsch cliche in video. Nice digits by the way.

>>213032470The vast majority of novels are adaptable. Anything called โunadaptableโ is just code for โcommercially unviableโ. In our capital-driven society, a truly faithful adaptation of Moby Dick could not be made The society is at fault, not the book. There would need to be a Francis Ford Coppola-Megalopolis situation where a filmmaker had capeshit level money to throw into it himself so he could make exactly what he wanted. Or Zack Snyder could just harness the power of his autistic fanbase and con Netflix into bankrolling another 6 hour epic for no monetary gain, you never know.
I think Lars would be a great director for Moby Dick. I can see the nautical manual chapters being adapted like the video essays he wove into the narrative of The House That Jack Built. And he has no problem with very long films. The only sacrifice we would make is that Ishmael would be gender swapped and played by Charlotte Gainsbourg and she gets QUEEQUEGโD in a Lars original scene.
>>213040899>after True Stories I have no intention to get into this thing again. I haven't even seen True Stories if we're being honest so I can't fault you. All I can do is recommend SMS and hope you check it out someday.

>>213045786depends. what did supremelemon rate it?
>>213043191I think it's a semantics problem. For me slop = entertainment, even if it's good, quality entertainment. I'd put a lot of my favorite joints in the slop category: a Burt Reynolds action picture, a Philippe de Broca comedy, a Robert Siodmak noir. A competently made, but thoroughly commercial "movie" like Silence of the Lambs for me is the definition of slop. It's too lost in the mechanics and tropes of its genre to have any real meaning. It lacks even middlebrow prestige and complexity of themes and or characterisation. It's a serious step back from Demme's uncritical humanism of his previous films. The easiest way to illustrate this is to compare the antagonists of Something Wild and Silence of the Lambs. In the context of the film's mechanics Ray Liotta's character is merely a dark double of Melanie Griffith's, but Demme can't help but make him an individual, an insecure, jealous, angry, uneducated man, first of all a man. Anthony Hopkin's character in comparison is for all intents and purposes a superhero, completely devoid of humanity, superintelligent, superstrong walking something. This character is a side effect of the movie's commerical calculation for audience impact and story continuity. It needs to be familiar and at same time it needs to be original - as a result the movie has no choice but to get lost in the spiral of the genre just to raise the stakes. The clever subversion and the tongue-in-cheek tidiness of Something Wild is very intelligent in comparison, very aware of the rules of the game, whereas Silence of the Lambs blindly embraces them. I feel like I'm stating the obvious, and I know a lot of /film/ites think genre films can be great, but for me they are rare exceptions and most of the time products of unusual circumstances.
We desperately need a film website that has tags on them. RYM has the right idea but each genres has like 8 films in them. It's extremely annoying to search for similar films to something you like.

>>213056685Iโve been working nonstop. I still love cinema, but have lost interest in posting here I guess. I still attend my local arthouse every showing. Iโm only here right now to get a couple autistic shitposts out of my system. I need to do that at least once every few months to not get fired from my job.

>>213054153No but i used to have this very weird recurring dream where i was a child actor in this one tv movie that took place in an amusement park, it was weird because it didn't feel like a dream but a memory, and it happened once in a while throughout years, then it stopped.

Damn is this thread dead or what?

>>213060221>split dead thread in halfThat would just make things worse.
Which one should I watch tonight?
>>213060544i think you should watch nothing :)
>>213060544Watch a nice Sarah Gadon or Amanda Fix kino.
>>213060568Nada it is
>>213060599I've got a better idea. I give you the finger, and you give me my freedom from your spamming
Watched La Plaisir, as the entry film for Max Ophuls after the recommendation of an anon a few threads ago. It is a very well-made, actually felt ahead of its time, comedy of manners. The framing and the long takes are superb, and many of these scenes reach greatness. 8/10
>>213060933I watched it some time ago and forgot about it; for me it's a 3/5. Gave me the itch to bang some whores, though.
>>213060695Just go on Tubi, they have the following Sarah Gadon kinos you can watch now for FREE!
>Indignation >11.22.63>The Great Darkened Days >Cutting Edge Chasing the Dream>Antiviral >Ruby Gloom>The Girl King>Cosmopolis >A Royal Night Out >Black BearBe sure to check out the following Amanda Fix Kinos on Tubi also!
>Lowlifes >Broken Diamonds
>>213061025Yeah I feel a bit horny rn.

>>213060695Apparently Nada is a miniseries and not a movie. That first episode was great, though. I'll wait a week before the next one and in the meantime take the next applicable suggestion for tonight

My thoughts on Nada so far:
>>213062019Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance
>>213061855Quite incorrect
>>213062273Actually objectively correct. No clue why you chose to obsess over one of the dullest actors of our time beyond autism
>>213062348Objectively and factually incorrect. Beloved and acclaimed Canadian actress Sarah Gadon is the most captivating actress of all time
2024 was a solid film year for me, seeing 1,500 features and almost as many shorts, with 1445 of those. I finished 1952 and got a sneak peak at 1953. Plus I spent nearly 5 months finding a large amount of unseen films from previous years I've visited. Passed 20K reviews and crushed the old Guinness record 13th year in a row. Hope it doesn't mean bad luck. Ended 2024 on a total of 39,269 films.
My wish for 2025 is that people stop asking me "How you watch so many films?"/"Where do you find these?". I get these messages almost daily, but most of the time it's from someone who doesn't really care, It's either a bot or their way of saying: "Holy crap, get a life!" Or if you are genuinely interested, just use Google or YouTube, they'll pop-up 90% of the time.
>>213061066>>213061119Tubi surprisingly has a good amount of kino, and it's really easy to download off there
>>213063410You're blessed by the Based God, you may continue on your kinic journey
>>213063410I watch a lot of silents and other pre-WW2 movies and they're almost all on youtube or at least archive.
>>213063770>>213063925it's just PUNQ's letterboxd description. don't believe that anon's lies. also, PUNQ doesn't even watch 99% of the movies he claims he does. he just plays them in the background throughout his day
