What didnt you like? I was actually really surprised. I forgot Kevin Bacon actually has a huge role so that was a really big bonus for me. Then his love interest as I recall is like a clone of Stephen Spielbergs first wife as I recall. The star of Brian De Palma's Fury? I actually couldn't believe it wasn't her. So that was another huge bonus. Just really the cast in general just completely shocked me. And then the music of course and really just everything. Not excellent or really even very good but I was still very surprised by how good it was. I assume guaranteed in the top 5 whereas before as I had remembered it I put it in the bottom 5 of the franchise.

#1 is an objectively terrible movie in retrospect. But it was groundbreaking and edgy when it came out, and it's important to note that most people who love the franchise got into it through the movies that came out AFTER the first 3.

If you look at retrospectives of the series and the original movies, they were marketted expertly and had people financially backing it who actually had a few brain cells to rub together.

The Friday the 13th movies were initially viewed as cashgrab schlock.
Through the 80's and 90's people watched them "ironically" but this elevated them to being a part of pop culture, which always results in uncritical geeks latching onto them and elevating them even higher.

Its a pretty decent slasher movie with a twist that spawned 8 sequels that range from pretty dumb to surprisingly ok.

The 2nd best soundtrack in film history right behind Jaws. In addition to having the iconic cue it also has generally excellent music. If it's not 2nd then its Psycho but still one of the best and most underrated soundtracks ever. Although I am of course giving huge credit to these music cues but that seems fairly standard.

The movies are kind of all over the place plotwise, but that adds to the charm.

>1st: Jason's mother is a psycho who wants to kill camp counselors for letting Kid Jason die as a kid
>2nd: Kid Jason actually wasn't dead but was innawoods retard that wears a sack on his head 'cause he's ugly and kills counselors for killing his mom
>3rd: Continuation of the second movie, but now Hillbilly Jason wears the iconic hockey mask
>4th: End of the slasher trilogy, Hillbilly Jason gets killed by child Tommy Jarvis
>5th: Tommy Jarvis is an adult with PTSD and a copycat killer pretends to be Hillbilly Jason and terrorizes him. People hate this film for no actual Jason but might be the most solid entry.
>6th: Whole franchise pivots here. Tommy digs up Jason's corpse for closure and a magic lightning bolt hits it and now Hillbilly Jason has become Undead Jason is an unstoppable juggernaut
>7th: Undead Jason vs Carrie with telekinetic powers for some inexplicable reason
>8th: Undead Jason kills people on a boat then goes to the Big Apple because
>9th: Big retcon. Jason wasn't really raised by a magical lightning bolt and wasn't an innawoods psycho but can body hop and possess people. See, he comes from a magic bloodline and the only way to kill him is with the +3 Dagger of Vorhees that they forgot to mention in the first 8 films. Jason gets poked and gets sent to hell
>Interlude - Freddy vs Jason: Freddy summons Undead Jason from hell and hijinks ensue between the two
>10th: Undead Jason goes to space and becomes Cyborg Jason and kills people on a spaceship

F13 doesnt hit the peaks of other franchises, but its consistent in its quality. Halloween veers into the unwatchable; NOES commits character assassination; Hellraiser films get lazy; and so on. As bad as F13 gets, I doubt anything is as awful as Busta Rhymes or introducing child rape.

So what was up with the very ending? It was really just a dream that he came out of the water? Because it's basically explicitly stated that Jason drowned in 1957. And this movie takes place in "present day" 1980. But she repeatedly referred to him as a boy when telling the police he came out of the water and was still out there. Otherwise canonically Jason is apparently in his early 30s for the series.
