Is Tokyo Mew Mew the darkest anime or are there anime that are even less lighthearted than it? Tokyo Mew Mew had some dark moments

not really. my point in one of OP's previous threads was that Cardcaptor Sakura was bright and cutesy, with a few 'darker' moments. this one was just cutesy and generally grating throughout, at least as far as i remember.

the real 'dark twist on magical girls' was Madoka Magica, although i doubt it was the first. pretty straightforward edgy stuff. bit like Elfen Lied, although better written.

i reckon it works in CCS, but it's really one of those 'card/monster of the week' shows that moves at a snail's pace. i mean, i ate it up, but that's back when just watching anime was fun.
