It's also like something out of a classic mythological cycle but set in a modern era kids/family movie.
I kept away from it for like twenty years because I thought it would be disappointing/retarded based on the praise it got and the first few minutes didn't grab me, but it gets slowly and almost linearly better until it all ties together in the end.

Those Who Hunt Elves. It's an ecchi/pervert anime series but surprisingly is less pedophilic than the average anime and you can skip like one episode and part of another to avoid all that without affecting the overall plot.
It's just a cool setting and story overall.
