Yes. As popular as this movie might be as a childhood nostalgic classic, it could be considered body shaming, even though the heavy kids are the good guys.

Now be honest, how many of you would be sent to a fat camp, assuming your parents had the funds and cared enough to do it?

I wanted to be sent to one. I was fat growing up in the 90s when people noticed and cared. Even random adults would mock me for it. No girls in school liked me because of it. My friends would typically tease me about it at least once per day. I hated myself and wanted to fix it. My parents told me to fix it myself but I was a stupid little kid that didn't know how. Didn't get control of it until I was 18, but by then I was pretty embittered by the whole experience.

Ironically, I was just average by modern kid standards. Maybe even athletic. I always hovered around 25-30% body fat, but most kids in the 90s were like 15% or less.

Fast food isn't advertised directed to children since they are out off the cradle outside America, so fat camps are not needed to psychologically deprogram them.

I used to respect Ben Stiller for kino such as Meet the Parents, Escape at Dannemora and Tropic Thunder. But after i saw the absolute disaster that was the second season of Severance, i now consider him a total hack nepo baby

Nah, in the end the kids realize self worth isn't just tied to body image, and they all take more practical/reasonable steps to better their health and weight. I think it would sit nicely in the zeitgeist of today.

That's how the plot goes, and the characters themselves are portrayed sympathetically. But it's literally called "Heavyweights" and filled with fat jokes.

Were Americans not as fat back then, or did they have a sense of humo(u)r about it?

We have always had a sense of humor about it, progressives are an international cult of collective narcissism which was more popular in Europe when this movie came out, you guys just all got amnesia so you could blame America for the "new" cultural thing now that it's become embarrassing and roundly mocked at last.
