Anton had a point. If he spied the satchel shortly after this, then why didn't he immediately clamber down there to get it. OTOH I can think of one good reason: it's right next to the border checkpoint, and he doesn't want anyone watching him. I think his idea was to wait until dark and try then, feeling it was safe in the tall weeds until then.

This random depositing of a satchel along a certain path compares directly with Fargo. Both men are killed before they even have a chance to retrieve the money. And in each case the satchel could easily be lost track of in the given natural setting (some anonymous snowbank on a rural road, a large field of grass next to a river).

This movie made me want to become a West Texas hermit surrounded by two dozen cats.

They fucked up the movie by taking out all the best scenes from the book. The entire teenage hitchhiker arc. The fact that the wife thinks her husband betrayed her. The movie is a complete failure in character development.

They also removed the entire part of Sheriff Bell confessing his secret from the war. I still think the movie is great but only after reading the book, acts like a nice tribute to it.

I'd cut that out as well though. It did not feel like cowardice at all and made the character feel a bit insincere.

For me the hitchhiker arc is the point of the book and I liked the movie until I read the book and realized they completely missed the point.
