Unfortunately true. I've seen just about all of them including the oldies with Errol Flynn and others. I like pirate lore, so it's unsettling for me to think that the mouse is the only one who made good ones.

I don’t know why the supernatural stuff gets so much hate. It’s literally the core of the series. The whole plot revolves around the idea that Davy Jones and the original pirate lords “beat” the monsters of the oceans and trapped a god. That made the ocean less scary and allowed the East India company to take over. Which then leads to a last stand against real ocean explorers versus a government take over. Supernatural ocean lore is the whole point. I’m sure they could make it as a herbal pirate action movie, but it wouldn’t be the same.

You’re making pretty weak comparisons. The pirate theme and supernatural theme go very much hand in hand. They blend together and work off each other. It isn’t 2 themes clashing and canceling the other out. It’s a pirate movie with pirate magic. Not like Back to the future 3 which is a sci fi comedy with a western back drop.

Captain Blood? actually a historical period piece. besides the duel with Basil Rathbone and the swashbuckling finale, you could say it's more of a heist movie, escaping the plantation and whatnot.

They are fun movies but they aren't good pirate movies. The movies struggle massively, especially 2 and 3, with their subject matter because they want their main characters to be pirates but also for them to be the morally good guys. It just comes across as stupid. Pirates rape, pillage and plunder. They kill without mercy for their own enrichment. Yet somehow in the movies the bad guys are the ones trying to get rid of the pirates and the good guys are "pirates" but never do any pirating.

i remember reading somewhere that either the writers or one of the actors didn't want the Black Pearl crew, even though they're pirates/baddies, to just go around stealing something. then the heroes either have to stop them, or get stolen goods back.
so the evil pirates' whole goal is to RETURN treasure which they all ended up happy with. and tbqh it is a fun twist on things.

Without the supernatural stuff, then it's just murderers, rapists and thieves against an overbearing force trying to rightfully eradicate them to protect civilians.
The whole "Order versus chaos, control versus freedom" is a lot less of an attractive story hook if the chaos and freedom side is just taking that and more from anyone incapable of defending themselves.
