Kung fu just means battle technique or martial art, anything goes as long as the characters are obviously trained at something

It shouldn't be controversial to say the japs were the founding fathers of kung fu movies as kenjuntsu and complete judo were often portrayed with elegant technique, supposedly judo was already gelded without all the karate killer techniques in it by the time it appeared on movies but it was still there.

Chinaman should be considered the actual pioneers at showing hand-to-hand combat but they have a knack for over-exaggerating shit or showing techniques so advanced it looks far-fetched by anyone not a monk in a secluded monastery, like jumping, almost all random suckers jump 3 meters like it was nothing. And by the time movies had stuntmen as all leading actors they also started putting wire fu shit so tons of movies are tainted with that silliness.

I think martial arts is the catch-all term, Kung fu feels more specifically Chinese but I get where you're coming from.

There's a huge variety of movies in the playlist unfortunately most are only decent, but realistically you can't expect so many gems to be released by a handful of studios so rapidly, though time didn't serve the kung fu genre in terms of new releases so well, so far

>Kung fu feels more specifically Chinese
True but if we consider what the east asians say it really is all kung fu, Tae Kwan Do are a compilation of techniques from the northern chinese learned from a manchurian, Karate or the base Shorin style is a very refined set of northern hand to hand combat forms taught systematically in the Tang dynasty.
Muay Boran and advanced Silat stuff is when things get tricky historically, we don't know where they come from in the west but Silat probably is a refined form of peasant defense techniques. We do need more Muay Thai movies, even chinamen back in the day put the thais as being as good or better than classical fighters in the movies they appear.

If fighting with weapons is considered a martial art now, then cowboy movies are martial arts too

>If fighting with weapons is considered a martial art now
Do you think there's no techniques in swordfighting? are you retarded? even battle tactic shit is martial arts too, hence why Sanjuro is a great martial arts movie because it showcases deception and fog of war very well. Martial arts is the entire system, tactics, discipline and technique.

>then cowboy movies are martial arts too
Gunfighting is a thing but most cowboy movies show no technique other than pulling the iron out of the belt, if a movie shows warfare tactics, reloading speed and the actual shooter aiming and shooting then yeah, it can be considered a martial art thing.
BUT very few movies show that, if anything cowboy movies imply the gunfighters are not disciplined, without military experience and not even trained, they can pinpoint anything out of pure plot armor powers.
Some exceptions appear at times, Chato's Land has a former warring apache going at it against a bunch of cowboys and a man who was a former officer in the Confederacy, some tactical decisions are discussed and made, the lone apache uses deception and ambushes while showing the consequences of this, akin to psychological guerrilla warfare, the gunfighting itself is also showcased as pockets of quick action between long times, because they go at it and then cover quickly to slowly reload their guns to move and then go at it quickly.
It also ends the same as a hypothetically successful guerrilla campaign, the opposing band succumbs to ideological infighting, internal rift and a very quick civil war.

Sure, i do look forward into seeing more martial cowboy movies, from all the stuff i've seen i think there's maybe two or three overall, one being Chato's Land which ironically is a veiled anti-Vietnam War movie.
Michael Winner did like to subvert his producers, Death Wish was supposed to be anti-vigilantism and The Mechanic was supposed to be a simply action movie without any philosophical questions about a man's existence in society.

A huge part of Kung fu involves weapons. It was teached multiple times to untrained civilians to fight wars effectively, that's why so many traditional Kung Fu weapons are just variations of a long stick with some blade somewhere so farmers would already have experience from their tridents, shovels or what have you. Handling those weapons with Kung Fu training is very different from just knowing how to use a spear, sword or knife traditionally. I'd say they definitely count as martial arts but of course we are all here for the bare knuckles
