Why did it do that poorly?

Because it was too good and they cut out a ten minute scene where the captain cleans herself in the most feline of ways.

Deliberately shafted marketing wise due to the prohibitive cost in making it, they did not want there being demand for the movie.

i loved it but i can see why not everyone was immediatly drawn to it. Its not whacky or furry shit so people were mostly like "huh?"
Same thing that happened with movies like titan AE and Atlantis and all that kinda somewhat serious animated kids series genre

Aside from the animation itself, it wasn't that good. Very formulaic, felt like I'd seen it before.

spbp. intentional sabotage on Disney's part so they could transition to the cheaper, full 3D CGI slop and blame it on the performance of Treasure Planet

It was too cool, the worldbuilding was too solid, the characters' motivations were too realistic, and it was still a fun movie. In short, it wasn't slop, and audiences expect slop from Disney.

I loved this movie as a kid. This and Atlantis were my favorites. Ironically both flopped.

Every animation studio tried making boy-focused movies around that time and they all flopped
why? was it because parents are more likely to make their boys sit through princess shit if the sister wants to see it but not vice versa?

Boys stopped watching cartoons after the 90s because of video games.

>princess shit
That's Disney, and Disney wasn't actually a princess company until the mid-2000s after their animation department had already been closed down and they created the princess merchandising line. Disney's OG roster was three dudes (Mickey, Donald, Goofy) being lads and the movies had overwhelmingly male leads. Even their most popular 80s and 90s tv cartoons targeted boys.

Brother Bear is an interesting case. It didn't do that well domestically, yet it was a surprise hit internationally

Disney had separate departments for their 2D animations and 3D animations, and both departments were competing for the same pool of resources and funding.
