It´s more of a sequel really. SMG is on it and she´s still the one and only Buffy. Joss is not involved though so we probably shouldn´t expect the same level of character development, cinematography or subtle blend between real life issues with the super natural that made the show iconic and a cult classic to begin with.

I reckon that if the people in charge are competent (meaning at least slightly above current standards) we may get something decent, then again, i tried reading the actual comics that attempted rebooting the show a few years ago, and boy, if it´s anything like that instead the show is dead.

But come on, they´d have to want to purposely fuck it up.

You say that, but even Buffy's last few years were dicey (not bad, exactly, but worse and a lot less consistent). There are a lot of ways a Buffy sequel could go wrong but there were a lot of ways the original Buffy did go wrong.

People are divided in that regard and to be honest, neither side is what you could call wrong. True enough S01 had the master, S02 gave us Spike, Dru and Angelus and S03 had Wilkins and Faith. In therms of antagonist you could certainly say it´s all downhill from there but the thing is there is a different way to look at things.

If you ask me S03 is where things actually start to get interesting rather than where things end. To me Buffy and Angel most memorable feature is character development and that improves dramatically after the highschool years. Everyone goes through so much shit and change and grow in ways that just doesn´t happen on most shows.

S06 is pretty much regarded as the worst but i believe there is value in seeing everyone touch rock bottom for example.

I didn´t say the show gets better i said the character development gets better. Like how Cordelia goes from entitled rich girl to a truly caring person or how Weasley goes from wimp with daddy issues to the guy that always makes the hard calls, or Buffy´s own struggles between herself and the nature of the slayer (rather than just being a schoolgirl focused on romance) or how Willow becomes addicted to magic. Even Faith´s redemption arc happens after S03.

What i´m saying is that even though you are objectively right in saying S01 to 03 have far better antagonists all those things are true as well.

The "lore" or whatever you want to call it tends to get totally out of control in fictional settings the longer they run on. A show likes this needs to periodically reset everything so they can go back to grounded stories where the character relationships aren't sidelined by years of accumulated powerscaling baggage.

Some of it works and some of it doesn't. I just think the show fell to excess despite freeing up space by setting a few characters loose for Angel (which is a better show than Buffy's latter half, in my opinion). I don't dislike the later stuff--I even mostly enjoyed season 7--but things were lost along the way. The show never really had a dynamic as strong as the Buffy/Giles/Willow/Xander collective and while it's realistic for relationships to change over time and for new people to be introduced I don't think the series became better for it or always replaced that original dynamic with something as interesting.

Xander is based though. By the end of the show he is the only one with real world skills, real world work experience related to his field, savings, access to credit and he was well in his way to bedding Dawn.

The slayer was a college drop out with experience on the fast food industry that just parachuted into her other job experiences and had no savings.
Willow too dropped out eventually due to her magic addiction issues. Giles life savings probably went to the drain along with the magic box and with the council gone so did that extra source of passive income.
Faith is an ex-con so no many job opportunities for her either.

Xander biggest loss was Anya... followed by the deposit on the apartment he was renting. That´s it. He has good track record too so he probably can get a job anywhere he goes. I´m just saying.
