Dave was done when he went to CBS. His NBC years are hysterical, but once the money got to him, like most comedians, he became bored, tired, and less funny every year. Dave, Leno and Conan were really the last of the old guard if that’s what you mean. People still cared.

That's kind of what I mean though. I used to watch Letterman nearly every night for most of the second half of the 90s. Some of his funniest moments were those ones when he would snap back to guests with some devastating off the cuff one-liner. Dave is a super sharp guy.
