Was he the last real late night host? They've tried to keep it going with liberal therapy sessions with Fallon, Colbert, Myers, and Kimmell, but none of them are turning a profit. Ratings are down cuz everyone lost interest in the streaming age.

Conan had a shot to carry the torch, but Leno cucked his ass into the stone age. The medium really died with Dave, right?

Dave was done when he went to CBS. His NBC years are hysterical, but once the money got to him, like most comedians, he became bored, tired, and less funny every year. Dave, Leno and Conan were really the last of the old guard if thatโ€™s what you mean. People still cared.

>Was he the last real late night host?
Yeah, but only because he got to ride Carson's coattails for a bit before late shows became irrelevant. His last decade was pretty bad, he went from young funny smartass to old grumpy asshole

After binging an unhealthy amount of Don Giller compilations, I've come to the conclusion that Late Night > Late Show.

Americans always struggled with late night chatshows. They had to ship in failed bongs like that fatty and Ben Elton's son.
About time it was put to bed.

I liked that James Corden tried to bring the UK chat show format to America, but unfortunately it was hosted by James Corden.

He was god-tier shit-stirrer and gossip generator. That's exactly what we need today, a host you love to hate that extracts drama from today's boring fucking celebrities. Just waiting for this generation's version

Letterman when he started out was the original Conan, not as goofy but still very anarchic and ironic, which was revolutionary for late night. Conan was more just carrying on the torch.

in the 90s he used to roast Clinton just as much as he roasted Bush in the 00s. It felt less political and more a satire of politicians in general. people were'nt totally directionbrained zoomers then.

also it helped that Dave was actually incredibly naturally funny.

Letterman wasn't so much funny as he was spontaneous, he always had something to say even if a joke fell flat or the show went off-script. Not even Leno had that skill, and the current group of hosts definitely don't

He was the only late night host. There was a Scottish guy that was better than him but he never actually hosted the late night show. Too bad the 40 year old virgin couldn't take his place.

That's kind of what I mean though. I used to watch Letterman nearly every night for most of the second half of the 90s. Some of his funniest moments were those ones when he would snap back to guests with some devastating off the cuff one-liner. Dave is a super sharp guy.
