It's a good thing that Katie Holmes couldn't return. If she did, it would've felt genuinely dogshit when Rachel chooses Dent over Bruce. As it is, with Maggie Gyllenhaal's dog face, you get to experience Bruce's reaction to her death, which is kino, without really feeling shitty about the abandonment and friendzoning. Unironic bit of providence that just added to the timelessness, kinoness, and rewatchability of the film.
