It's one of the most inconsistent show of all time, well that is until around season 8 where it went to absolute dogshit the whole way.
But the seasons and episodes before that varies so much, there some really great moment and characters, but at time some of the most stupid and lazy writing I've seen.

It's probably more fun for the viewers and easier to write too.
Imagine a series that goes all in on survival aspect, looting stores, hunting, tending to camp and trying to not die of exposure, zombies are only ever seen from far away and become more of a boogie men in later episodes
