Why wouldn't he give Commodus a sword?

Maybe because it was not in the warriors code to do it so.

> Can't be for honour

He'd already committed irredeemable acts of betrayal far worse/morally wrong than stabbing a prisoner (murder of innocent woman and child) and had already gone all the way to support Commodus.

> Can't be due to pragmatism

It would have been far more practical to support a coveted general in the first place.

>Warriors code

He never abided by any warriors code from the beginning. He never gave Maximus a chance to exercise his rights as a warrior in a duel or any fight near the beginning of the film, he just arrested him out of the blue and ordered the execution of him and his entire family

Trash character

He opposed Commodus from the start and probably also believed that Commodus murdered his father but was more shrewd than Maximus and knew that to act was to get dealt with the same way Maximus did. However at the very end he knew he was in control and had the power to ack Commodus by not acting while two dead men fought each other.

This character was a bastard, so it's either for the love of the sport or because he feels that Commodus is nearing the end of his reign and he picks the right side at the last moment.

>murder of innocent woman
Not just that. Remember, they ravaged her again and again AND AGAIN. Made her moan like a whore.
