He'd already committed irredeemable acts of betrayal far worse/morally wrong than stabbing a prisoner (murder of innocent woman and child) and had already gone all the way to support Commodus.

However at the very end he knew he was in control and had the power to ack Commodus by not acting while two dead men fought each other.
