Bros, what was it like watching a series like X-Files when it first aired on TV? I've started watching it recently, about halfway through season 1 and am really enjoying it, but I feel like it probably hits differently when you can't watch all the episodes back to back and I was originally watching it whenever, but now I watch it later at night to help set the mood for the show.

I love the way the various characters are just straight aura farming, I feel like that is not something that happens enough in shows today.

Yeah, I'm sure the convoluted soap opera of the alien arc didn't seem as ridiculous when they were doling it out in single episodes separated by months. They're good episodes individually but you shouldn't think about them too hard as a whole.

Aura Farming is the action of doing things in a manner to make you look cool. Many fictional characters can be labeled as "Aura Farmers" due to their writing.

You tuned in and hoped it was creature feature of the week ep and not one of the long multi-year drawn plot of the god damn alien oil eps. Being when you march past the seasons now on streaming or dvd/blu it's easy to forget you're watch a decade plus running show.
when you watched it live you might miss a few weeks or hell even a month or more if you had real life stuff going on. The creature features are so self contained it's always interesting x-files stuff.
When you get into into ok remember back 4+ months ago when...... no, no I don't being I didn't even see that ep.
Lost kind of has this same issue where it's easily way better now when you can just pound past eps. Alias is the opposite being the show hinges on 1/2 the eps being mini cliff hangers and that doesn't work if you binge watch.

it was magical and completely unique. the ufo thing was something completely fresh back then. you also started too see alot of things spooky and weird. also the insane sex chemistry moulder and scully had. goosebumps left and right. you looked ALOT forward to the day new episode aired. back then i even bought a book that analized episodes.

this show doesnt work with binge watching due to its monster of the week structure. its made to be watched once a week otherwise it gets stale quickly.

It was the perfect show to capture the American zeitgeist in the 90s "end of history" era when the opulent postwar order was starting to decay and fringe beliefs and conspiracy theories were starting to go mainstream. It was also arguably the first ever internet cult show. It probably couldn't be replicated today now that all of this stuff is just taken for granted.

Zoomers aren't people, but algorithm-driven faggots who mix the speech patterns of negroes and really dumb, superficial women. The idea of aura farming reflects how zoomers behave. A normal person would say someone is cool or charismatic, implying it's an inherent trait. A zoomer droid can't understand someone having inherent qualities, but can only judge things based on fake performances, clickbait and algorithms, so they think people who are cool are doing something artificial to appear cool, hence "farming". "Aura" is basically how a middle-aged, new age woman would describe a person who emanates a cool or charismatic presence.

>Mythology episodes get rendered
that's the interesting thing about watching or at least rewatching the show now. If you where not an alien oil sort of fan that entire story line almost feels fresh on a rewatch.
It just works better when it's not spread out over nearly 10 years. Yet as others mentioned the monster of the week eps can start to get stale in a rapid fire watch being the first 30min of each ep is kind of the same. No one believes Mulder.. but wait.. it's true, well maybe.

in sociopolitical context, it now seems like predictive programming. Skepticism about UFO, govt secrecy are now entertainment, managing perceptions that it's OK to doubt and keep a distance to let them do their thing. our rewards is a weekly suspenseful mystery, giving a chance to peer into what FBI does (the sacred badge's powers!), what weird shit they pull up or come across. It quells the curiosity so less demands about IRL disclosure + transparency. Chris Carter in S9 last 2 episodes (??) described the vax rollout of 2021+. He is DoD/CIA asset.

Nah man, it started in the 90s. The cold war was over, there were no more serious international rivals for the time being, and domestic culture started cannibalizing itself and getting weird. Radical anti-government and conspiracy theory movements surged in the 90s, as did interest in UFOs and paranormal stuff. Art Bell's radio show was the other big popularizer of that after The X-Files. 9/11 was a turning point for conspiracy stuff but not the origin.

Take your meds, but to be fair Carter definitely had his finger on the pulse of known and speculated government psyop tactics. The early episode where they spike a whole town with super-acid disguised as fluoride/pesticide and get everyone to murder each other as a test in manufacturing paranoia and distrust was super prescient to what you hear /pol/friends ranting about now.

Did they purposely get like the most non-tailored suit for him int that scene? Like throughout the show most of his clothing and suits are so nicely tailored.

UFOs as a social phenomenon peaked in the 50s, but UFOs as a pop culture entity were very fringe and basically a meme until the X-Files. Everyone knew about them but TV and film didn't often entertain them as a serious subject before the 80s. Close Encounters and Communion started to reverse the trend, and the X-Files blew it wide open.

There was conspiracy shit long before the 90s, some of which was ironically grounded in some semblance of reality. And the end of the cold war signaled hope and reconciliation, which defined most of the 90s. Sure, it gradually singled out the US as the only target for criticism, due to it being the only remaining superpower (not that the soviet union really was one), but it wasn't until the GWOT that things turned to shit.
Hell, the 80s were a lot worse in terms of moralizing bullshit and excess, thanks to yuppies, Christian-conservatives whining about censorship and the US ceding ground to Japan, and all the lefties kvetching about it. It's what spawned the whole cyberpunk genre. But the 90s were mostly an era of positivity and hope, aside from the usual teenage angst, before the 2000s started to bring everything down.

Sorry but I think you're looking back with rose tinted millennial/zoomer glasses. The cultural rot didn't start in the 90s either, but that was when the cracks really began to show. The positive and optimistic vision of consoomer culture coexisted with an creeping undercurrent of nihilism (in the real philosophical sense, not the rick & morty meme), pessimism, social division and distrust of authority, manifesting in increasingly fringe, radical movements, conspiracy theories and new-age/paranormal fads. This was acknowledged and analyzed even at the time. It was coming to the fore in the 90s and politics and culture took note of it, and yes 9/11 and the middle east wars were accelerating factors but the ignition happened in the previous decade.

Like I said, that was part of early 90s teenage culture, that started with grunge faggotry. Then again, the understanding of 90s culture today has turned into the same parody we have of the 60s, as if that was the only culture that existed. Moping Gen-Xers were just a tiny part of it. You also had the "radical" culture, the surviving rock/metal culture from the 80s (aka B&B) and the Euro-techno shit, and towards the end of the 90s you had all kinds of gay boy bands and girl bands, and there wasn't much left of the early 90s moping.
Also, it's weird how everyone seems to have forgotten how iconic motorcycles and ripped working class guys were in the 90s. They were everywhere. A young dude on a Harley. It was in every gum commercial, half of the B-tier TV shows and even in some movies.

I'm old enough to remember it, dumbfuck. Hell, I remember a bit of the 80s.
The only thing you're right about is that the cultural rot started much earlier, but that's something that goes back as far as you want it to go back, depending on your political perspective. Communist propaganda and infiltration did a number on the US and the west in general.
