I really like his characterization, and it doesn't feel forced to modernize Riddler, a character who thinks outsmarting Batman is the end-all, be-all to his existence, in this way.

It makes sense when you realize The Riddler (not just in this movie, but in the comics as well) has always been about serving his own ego and proving how smart he is. The people he kills in the first half of the movie are pretty deserving candidates and all, but it's not really about justice for him as it is about proving he could do this, gain followers and get away with it. To him, proving his intelligence is all that matters, and if he can do that he considers himself "better" than others.

Honestly I think Reeves was onto something with this Riddler. Shame that we will probably never see him again. If he had the same role in the trilogy that Heath Ledger was supposed to have before dying that would be interesting.
