not it was not that bad, and the ambition of what they were trying to pull off for the time is insane. faggot weebs disliked it because it doesn't have the stupid anime-ish trappings of the games, normies disliked it because it was overhyped as literally being photoreal and because adult animation has a very limited audience. but it is absolutely artistically worthy.

What always makes me kek is how every attempt Square has made at writing a coherent, compelling two hour screenplay has blown up in their slit-eyed faces.
Yet somehow, /v/niggers will defend them as if their "games" are the second coming of Christ, when they're absolute dogshit, the original moviegame franchise. Makes shit like The Last of Us and God of War (2018) look like proper interactive experiences.

Only thing I remember feeling about the movie was that it wasn't a Final Fantasy, but I still liked it. No FF game to that point was essentially a full on sci-fi. That wasn't until XIII landed many years later. You could argue parts of VIII & X were, but it wasn't the primary aesthetic driving what you saw in them.

It’s bad, the animation is alright but really lifeless at times, and the voice “acting” is awful. Like outstandingly bad. Music is pretty solid, plot is serviceable. There’s some really bad lines in the script, I’m assuming that they are some translation issues though.
>Evil force are called phantoms
>The protagonists are looking for spirits
>Characters mock the idea that the phantoms and spirits may be ghosts as if those aren’t synonyms.

I would love to read a behind the scenes account of how all this went down. Final Fantasy 7 was a big hit for a video game, but they should have known that's just a tiny slice of the general audience. It didn't have broad enough appeal to justify spending over 100 million dollars on this. The stuff I've read about how they thought the scientist woman would be a popular digital actress they could lease out to other studios is pure lunacy. Who the fuck was making these decisions?

He continued to produce them. I agree 6 and 7 were the best but after 10 they're unplayable. 10 is the last one he produced, which came out just after he left. He was executive producer on it.
>inb4 producer doesn't do anything
Since this is /tv/ I'll put it in /tv/ terms: the showrunner and supervising director of a TV show get EP credits but no writing or directing credit, and they are absolutely instrumental in shaping the final product. The creator of the franchise graduating to director and then producer doesn't mean he does nothing.

It has great cgi for its time and excellent 2000s sci fi aesthetics, but thats all it has going for it. The plot is stupid and doesnt feel like an FF plot at all, the acting is bad, and the soundtrack is forgettable . I dont know what they were thinking with this one. Perhaps they thought that the cutting edge cgi would be good enough to make sales, but they were wrong.
FF Advent Children is better, and probably the best 3d cgi anime movie in existence, which is a low bar.

From what I remember, this was written as a completely original story and then the studio made them make it into a Final Fantasy movie (basically just naming the movie Final Fantasy)

The basic plot of a planet having a soul is really the only connection from the movie to the games, but this was coincidental originally. I've seen a youtube review of this movie a while back and the writer of the script commented that this was all the case.

I think its a decent sci-fi movie and didnt deserve the rabid hate it got, but if you were a final fantasy fan and saw this in 2000 I get it.

Boring. Aimless. The phantoms never felt like a threat nor did they have personality to make them interesting. An FF anime in Ghibli style with a typical (at the time) FF story would've been a mega hit. SW was bafflingly mid and even the most ardent FF fans I knew just didn't like it.

Of course this is 4chan so I'm sure before I even scroll down there'll be a bunch of contrarians pretending like this bad movie is good.

Graphics: pretty good, probably the best CGI movie until Shrek 2 and the best Japanese CGI movie until Appleseed 2 or the Resident Evil CGI movies.

Setting: kind of generic 90s sci fi but not terrible. Phantoms look cool. I think it was quite foolish to have a movie called final fantasy and not have swords and chocobos though. The soldiers already had plasma guns, they might as well have had plasma swords.

Story: it's some dumb mcguffin hunt with a really stupid new age boomer ending where they just needed good vibrations and the power of love or something to coexist with the alien immigrants. Probably the worst part of the movie.

Acting: what you can expect from getting celebrities instead of voice actors. They wanted to make the MC some kind of virtual actress they could license to others, which sounds kind of dumb, but at the time Eidos was pimping out PS1 Lara Croft to shill things so it's not as far fetched as it sounds.

none of this is in the ending.
they only need to activate the device, the love interest literally dies to activate it, and the device expels the alien immigrants, except it does this by "letting their souls rest" (in practice target poisoning) instead of "exterminating them with big guns that does lot of collateral damage".

Square 100% misread the room with this film.

People wanted a film version of FF7. Not a sequel, but a theatrical adaptation of the game.

They instead decided to instead make an original story with an eye towards reworking it as an interactive movie on the PS2, to basically fill the gap before the release of FF10 and double dip on people buying both the movie version and the PS2 game version.

It flopped so hard, that it nearly put Square out of business and more to the point and to the eternal fury of everyone at Square, killed their chances to destroy their hated rival Dragon Quest.

Square was in the middle of a hostile takeover of Ennix (the makers of Dragon Quest) that would have allowed them to fire every fucking person at the company and give them ownership of their IPs, including Dragon Quest. And internally, Square was bragging to Ennix executives faces that once they owned DQ, they were killing the franchise as far as no new games, no remakes of the classic games, basically locking it in the vault to kill the franchise off so that everyone would have to buy and play Final Fantasy in Japan.

The movie flopped so fucking hard and so utterly and completely fucked Square up financially, that they lost ALL upper hand in the hostile takeover. Which immediately became less consuming and killing their rival and more "We need to merge with you guys to stay alive!". Ennix agreed to continue with the merger, but on THEIR terms; everyone at Ennix kept their jobs, they got MASSIVE control over the now merged company meaning that Square has ever since been forced to watch Ennix executive swing their dicks around and remind Square executives that the company is only still alive because of Ennix, and more to the point, Square was forced to basically use all of their resources and connections to FINALLY make Dragon Quest a big hit in the US while continuing to give the franchise the royal prince treatment in Japan to keep the lights on.

Japanese are a pretty stupid people. Even stupider is that the higher someone is up at the totem pole, the less you are allowed to defy them. They're basically asian arabs where money and social status is a license to follow an obviously idiotic idea even when its clear that it'll be the organization's demise.
Now add the fact that these people can be nepo hires, or ultra boomers that never really used a computer their whole lives. They just think digital woman = cortana and tell the rank and file to make his crackpot idea into a reality.

Don't give a shit about twinks with retardedly huge swords riding ostriches. And no one else did either since that movie flopped hard. I dont think there was even a sword. Like you'd think maybe they'd show you a chocobo, maybe someone casts a magic spell, summons an iconic character like ifrit or shiva. I waited and waited and waited and the movie ended, I thought thats how they'd get out their problem with the 1 shot ghost aliens, but no, its just a shitty sci fi movie with mid ass characters. Why did they think the girl character would be a star? She's not even particularly attractive.

Star Wars "magic" is not even remotely comparable to the level of magic in FF. the producers figured they couldn't compete with LOTR on the pure fantasy segment and couldn't compete with the SW prequels on the sci-light fantasy segment. so they went with hard sci-fi with the only fantasy themes rebranded as sci-fi being those absent from SW such as Gaia theory and mysterious aliens with weird powers that nobody really gets.

I think the point of contention around whether it had the feeling/aesthetic of Final Fantasy comes from the fact it lent too hard into the Sci-Fi elements without having the more over the top/intentionally camp/fantastical elements to balance it.

FFVIII is probably the entry that has the most futuristic bent (you even go to space in a rocket ship), but even that has the imagery and theming of teenagers casting fire balls and the repeated ideas of knights and witches in the themes. Even the entries that bend more towards modern appearances (FFXV mostly) still has the characters being pretty anime boys with giant swords

With this lens, it could be argued the kind of 'cringe anime' stuff that some people argue against is actually baked into the DNA of the franchise, and it's removal creates a feeling of dissatisfaction. While the broad strokes of the movie align with some themes, in the end it just lacked the aspect that make FF stuff compatible with each other

The main scene I remember from spirits within is this needlessly long scene of a big complicated rusty metal “train” with tons of big metal tubes all over it slowly transitioning from being a train to being a funicular. The hybrid train/funicular is completely irrelevant to the rest of the movie. There’s no dialogue while it transitions. There was dialogue before and after, so the characters just stop talking while this sequence plays. The scene has no narrative purpose. The movie is filled with such scenes that exist only to show off how much work they did. They’re ultimately just padding.

however, at least both of those were final fantasy. spirits within was NOT final fantasy. i dont even remember the film, because i was too preoccupied with disappointment that it was in no way final fantasy. if they just made some sci-fi cgi movie, it would have been better received.

just had a flick through and yes it has some very good songs, such as At Zanarkand (good enough to sit amongst great songs by the likes of Mozart and Chopin), Song of Prayer (authentically sounds like something you'd hear in a chapel) and Besaid Island (really adds a great vibe to the game and has a unique and beautiful harmonic and sonic character). overall FF7's soundtrack is much more consistent, fitting and interesting. I found FF7 as a game to be better and more intuitive as well.

Liberi Fatali from FF8 is a really great song by Uematsu I believe. He was on a streak for FF7.

No. That’s bullshit made up in the same vein as “genre fatigue” and over saturation. Since every final fantasy was different, but also exceptional on most levels, the expectations for the movie were “different, but exceptional on most levels.” Now, sure, you can argue spirits within was exceptional on some definition of “most levels,” but it was severely lacking on writing. >>213278534 pretty much nailed it. There’s also how the movie was more interested in showing off how much work they put into making it than telling an actual story.

True but there is different and there is different. For all the differences among the games there were always recurrent elements that, for a lack of a better term, defined FF identity.

As you say, writing was weak but i don´t believe excellent writing would have saved it either. If you ask me they just choose a genre and story that were not inherently compatible with the expectations associated to Final Fantasy. Presumably this was done to appeal to a larger international audience.

The result is a somewhat generic space marine, somewhat sci fi story that feels unfamiliar and disconnected from the name Final Fantasy. It feels more like they choose a story they thought people would like to see rather than a story that they actually wanted to tell.

This is every Final Fantasy game; people just don't want to admit that they're all relatively poorly written, especially once you realize how many of them do that stupid
>Hey, you know that main antagonist we've been building up the whole game? Turns out he's not actually the real big bad! The big bad is this heretofore unmentioned dude or mysterious cosmic evil or whatever that we're just now introducing 85% of the way through the game.

I'll admit that was poorly phrased. It's more that it's as complex as you want it to be. As a casual player you might be intimidated at first, but you can just follow the intended path, while a more hardcore player can make more informed decisions and take characters down alternative paths.

Honestly, I forget Necron is even a thing. It's so vague and superfluous. You could just blot out that whole little segment and it would change basically nothing. Felt like the devs just decided to throw in an extra final boss fight for fun. It's probably telling that they originally intended Hades to be the final final boss fight instead of Necron before shuffling him off to be a secret boss.
