Would it ever be possible to read this on a kindle?
I read comments that it's impossible but I'm too cheap to buy a hardback and just rather torrent it.

Guy goes crazy editing a madman's essay on a horror movie that does not exist. The movie is about a family in a house that is bigger on the inside than on the outside. The hidden twist is the guy and the essay don't actually exist either and the whole thing was written by the madman who was depressed that he never had a son.

Experimental movies that nobody here watches.
A Field in England perhaps.

A true equivalent would look more like an assembly of found footage and stock interviews but half the material is irrelevant build up. Thereโ€™s no overarching narrative and it canโ€™t be shot as a movie. Just a folder of 100 files to be played out of sequence.

>possible to read this on a kindle?
Impossible. Defeats the purpose. The book is intended for you to flip the pages, make annotations, turn the book around and over, get tired from going back and forth between different pages, even the sound of turning the pages when Johnny Truant is thinks he is hearing the monster or when Halloway shoots the walls making a hole on the pages of the book have an impact while reading. It would be like watching a 10 min essay summary of Synecdoche New York and hoping to get the same impact. You will get the story, sure, but the story is pretty simple, it's about the experience you share with the characters of the book itself. Even when not reading, having the hard copy looking at you from your bookshelf makes you feel unease, at least it happened for me when I obsessed over it for a month.

It's 4 stories told in parallel. The story of a photographer whose house gets impossibly huge on the inside while remaining small on the outside and the decline of his family and love life as he obsesses over the house mystery. This is documented on film and retold on the 2nd story of Zampano, an old blind man who investigated the tapes and wrote notebooks trying to understand what happened until he died under mysterious circumstances. The third story follows Johnny Truant who finds the Zampano's notes and tries to rebuild what happened in the tapes from text as a way to cope with the loss of his mother and his empty life. The fourth story is yourself reading the book and how different scholars, academics and real life or fake people interpret the entire book and their discussion about it written in footnotes and showing the impact of the book, the film and the lives of Johnny, Zampano, Navidson in real life or not.

But that's also kind of the point because the characters in the book also realize that it doesn't matter and there's a message about family and the dangers of obsession. House of Leaves is overrated and pretentious but its still a good book that you have to experience for yourself to truly understand.

In terms of plot overlap - pic related (it's not great).
In terms of themes and aesthetics, the epilogie of 'The house that Jack built' comes to mind.

There isn't really anything quite like it and it's a good thing they didn't try to adapt it. Aronofsky in his prime could have maybe pulled it off. Eggers wouldn't do a bad job, but the material probably doesn't have enough homolust for his taste.

Both are more scifi oriented and mostly about kids/teenagers but still, there are similar themes. Not really the outright unsettling, bizarre shit from the book but its something.

Just read the book, and instead of ignoring the weird typeset, be aware of it, think about it as you're reading
Trust me, if you just let the book do what it's trying to do and stop trying to meta-meta analyze it, it's an incredible read.

This is the only movie actually (legally got around it by being "JUST" different enough) based on the book. You could say in spirit only. Because the fag author won't sell the rights like a moron, while he's barely scraping by selling some "the green mile" novella series with 10 pages per book and doing stupid collabs with his sister musician. It's a good enough movie but like any movie in pales in comparison to the book. In this case, while being a good movie, it's 1/100th of what the book is (if you skip all the drug addict and mom nonsense and just read the Navidson Report).

I would say that this is pretty similar to The Navidson Record plot-wise, specifically, as opposed to House of Leaves more broadly. I think there are a couple story-within-a-story-within-a-story-within-a-story movies, though the only one that comes to mind is The Grand Budapest Hotel in which this is just played as a joke at the beginning and ending since the outer layers are otherwise irrelevant.

The structure of House of Leaves makes it hard to find a good film comparison since a visual medium adaptation of the book would be something along the lines of a psychotic alcoholic Youtuber commenting over a half finished documentary about the Navidson record that includes excerpts of the film produced by a madman who started censoring his own documentary before he died. Also said Youtuber has a second channel where he reads letters his mother wrote him from an asylum.

It is very gimmicky. I would have appreciated it more if it was better integrated into the story and used sparingly, but it is mostly done to say "Look what I can do!", with only a couple exceptions.

Did anyone else find Johnny Truant to be so obnoxious that they couldn't finish the book? I keep telling myself to try and get back into it but I lose motivation halfway through each excruciating rant about fucking hookers and doing drugs or whatever

I like the approach to a unreliable narrator who's mental struggle is the spirit of the book. But, God, he is executed so poorly. Pale Fire does it way better.

No because a lot of what makes the book interesting is the odd formatting of pages.

What I really did not like about this book is how often it jumps to one of the narrator's stupid fucking diary entries about fucking homely women and letting them put fingers in his asshole. Whenever a Johnny section came up I skipped until I didn't see women anymore.

The Night House has a lot of Navidson Record vibes to it.
But House of Leaves is a lot more than just the Navidson Record.
It's multiple narrators deep about a fictional documentary and layers in real life shit to make it more credible.
Butterfly Kisses has elements of that. It's a fake documentary about a fake documentary directed by a guy who might have died IRL and has a lot of interviews with real people.

this but honestly, also the navidson record

i rarely see anyone pick apart zampano's shtick as much as they do with truant's exploits, but it's kinda just as annoying - you *know* you're reading the same dude cosplaying as an edgelord, then an old guy

I didn't have the resources to decode the letters because I read much of it on a plane, but looking it up later, that one message was just brutal. I can't imagine slowly decoding a secret message from my infirm mom only to see that appear letter by letter.
