I recently watched Rome, and now I want more... movies/shows that will basically teach me history. It doesn't matter if it's somewhat fictionalized, because whatever I watch, I read about the real life stuff afterwards.
So basically I want awesome historical fiction that is basically me doing a history lesson while not being bored.
Obviously I don't want any woke or gay shit, but maybe you guys can recommend something? Some stuff I've seen is:

>Outlaw King
Was pretty good. Read about it and besides having the king be there at the last battle it's apparantly very accurate to what happened
>Wolf Half (TV show)
First season was excellent, second season was made 10 years later, in 2024, and so suddenly a lot of people in medieval england are black, which is infuriating
>Red Cliff part 1 and 2
Awesome John Woo action movie about some shit that went down in asia way back. Great battle scenes actually
>Kingdom of Heaven
Obviously

So... what else? I'm considering "The Last Kingdom" but it looks kinda gay? Like tryhard "cool"? Also considering a spanish TV show about the spanish queen Isabella just called Isabel, but I'm not sure if it's a boring soap like The Tudors or actually cool/good

I've read a lot about it afterwards, and it's... legit educational. The two main character's didn't actually befriend both Ceasars and fuck Cleopatra and all that obviously, and there's some simplifications and mild tweaks like having Augustus be upper class originally even though he wasn't, and it's unfortunate that the last half of S2 speedruns through history, but pretty much most of what happens with the political stuff is what happened. A new version with GoT-money and more seasons would basically be the most amazing thing ever

ohh yeah I have seen it and it is spot on what I want. Thanks for recommending it though
A thing that show does, and Rome does even more so, is having the characters have the same morality as people did back then. I love that, like in Rome, literally everyone abuses plebs and has slaves. None of that "Augustus must have the morality of a californian zoomer from 2025" shit
But yeah The Terror fucking rules

The best part for me was the portrayal of Caesar. It was the best one ever imo. As an avid student of Roman history and having read Comentarii de Bello Gallico, I really think Ciaran Hind captured more of the man than anyone else.

The Last Kingdom was lame but somewhat watchable. The Vikings is great early on but it really spirals downhill fast especially once Ragnar isn't the focus anymore.

It literally is a soap opera, except it's r-rated so people think it's somehow mature.

>having the characters have the same morality as people did back then
oh dude then I have a 1-2 punch for you. fictionalized versions of real people who act like people living in the age.
both are good adaptations of the source material but the original one has un-subtitled Japanese so you're wholly reliant on the man's translator Mariko, a good creative choice for the time but I'm glad they put more of the Japanese characters in the second version
the main white man Blackthorn is an English Protestant who has a blood feud with the Portuguese who have already started colonizing Japan, because they're Catholic. this is huge in the book and it present in the second adaptation, can't remember how much of it is in the first
the original miniseries just got an HD remaster. it was shot very wide like they planned to crop it widescreen and put it in theaters overseas like they did with 'Salem's Lot so you can fill your screen without losing anything
It's on Paramount+ or wherever you sail

The Borgias & the Tutors were good if you can handle no action. Medici: Masters of Florence has a bit of action yet still mostly drama.

Last Kingdom was a coproduction between the bbc and netflix for the first two seasons. Those seasons are watchable.
Then neflix produces it exclusively and the whole thing goes to shit.

All of the classic big historical epics at least follow the major plot points of history and many can be pretty accurate. While they change a lot of things they had enough money and effort put into them that they feel real and lived in. Think all the ones that are some dudes name like lawrence of arabia, El Cid, Saladin, Aleksander Nevsky, dr zhivago, etc. And a lot of classic literature ones like War and Peace. There was a chart in the tv wiki i dont know if that was saved before if was killed

I riked it. High production values and great actors. I don't remember anything pozzed, the lead female is treated as a psychopath. Season 1 starts a little slow but picks up significantly in the final episodes.

My wife wanted to watch the Tudors so I begrudgingly capitulated, expecting romance slop.
Instead I got diplomatic, religious, and fashion kino. And tits. Would highly recommend watching with your gf/wife if sheโ€™s into the European period pieces. (Though probably not worth a watch as a single guy.)
