That's not how radio works. All those interviews are pre-recorded, and politicians (since this is where it always happens) are trained to talk in circles to avoid as much political heat as possible. These guys would go for 10 minutes on the same subject if you let them, totally disregarding the actual question. That's why the interviewers tend to interrupt and cut them off, because their program schedule doesn't allow for more in its budget.

My mom used to play NPR on the way to/from school for hours every day growing up.
Not an exaggeration to say they're a big part of stoking my intellectualism and interest in learning about the world and the people in it.

Sad to see them abandon that service/duty of real public broadcasting and focus on partisan indoctrination.

I'm not sad to see them go now. In truth what NPR and Terry Gross and the rest did for me as a kid disappeared a long time ago.

NPR was already on its last legs where I am, dedicating huge chunks of air to bluegrass music. I liked a lot of the syndicated NPR helped make, like Wait Wait Don't Tell Me and Planet Money. Lots of other good podcasts. I hope this doesn't flat out kill those, I know it won't but there's a nagging feeling that the things I like have pretty significantly changed.
