I'll give you a blog post: I saw Prince Vegeta die on Planet Namek. Later I saw (I didn't see it, it was off screen), Duncan Mcleod's wife die. She wasn't a protagonist. She was innocent. This was the first time in a tv show where someone innocent died, from my personal experience. It made an impact. It was mourned in the show. They gave it time. I saw a lot of people die on screen, both in shows and in movies. But you'll always remember the first ones. The stage needs to be set and you need to be emotionally involved.
