>>213304699I think it was the right decision at the very least to have the Engineer not give any answers and just go full Hulk on them. In the script and deleted scenes the Engineer speaks back, but in the regular cut of the film he says nothing after David speaks to him. Going just by the film, the audience was left confused why the Engineer just went ham.
>>213304768I think it was a terrible idea because there was so little to the rest of the movie. The audience came to see the movie for that payoff with the engineer. MAYBE it would have been appropriate if he had a trilogy of movie's with full story planned out and the next movie would be out in a year. But the next movie came out five years later and completely abandoned everything the audience was interested in.

This thread made me put on the Furious Gods: The Making of Prometheus documentary. For some reason, partly for personal reasons as an artist, but probably also for other reasons I don't fully understand, it's one of the comfiest documentaries ever to me.
Especially the first half with the concept/pre-production phase.
For those who don't know, Prometheus wasn't really written by Lindelof. This seems like a popular misconception. Most of the story was written by Jon Spaihts, who was hired for the project when he pitched Ridley the C-Section scene. He and Ridley Scott worked together closely during the very early concept stages for the project. They had really grand ambitions, taking the original goal of an Alien prequel and coming up with this 2001: A Space Odyssey style epic about pre-visitation, ancient aliens, and so on. Damon Lindelof was brought on late in the writing phase, and it sounds like his role was to, frankly, dumb the script down to make it "more accessible for modern audiences" (although I do actually like the Engineers not speaking or have their motives explained - which *was* a Lindelof change).
Anyway, whether you like it or not Prometheus (and Alien: Covenant, and the Scott Free production Raised By Wolves - which has the stamp of Ridley's style on it), are full of interesting *ideas*
These ideas are what make Ridley's movies worth watching to me. I like to think, and more importantly for movies, I like to see things I've never seen before - like the C-Section scene.
Without ideas (and you see this with both the Bladerunner sequel and alien Romulus - and with remakes of 80's sci-fi films in general), sequels/reboots/prequels - new entries in these classic idea laden series tend to become mere rehashes of the iconic imagery we've already seen, and usually done badly and in less interesting ways.
Unless Hollywood gets people to right the ship, steer things towards good new ideas, it seems like they're just going to be stuck recycling.
>>213312280Them Japaneses, man, hha-ha!
>>213304385>>213304476This never happened. None of this "cut dialogue" existed. Some weirdos made it up and are still pretending this is real.

>>213312581lol, he does look like Stephen Miller
>>213311814True. Prometheus should have been its own non-alien series and fully planned out though. The idea that they not only already knew about aliens beforehand but that xenomorphs were humanity's sibling created by their shared engineer ancestor fundamentally ruins anything interesting about Alien which is the better movie. And you can't go through it stringing audiences along with empty mystery boxes anymore. People are fucking sick to death of being promised cool reveals only to find out that for years they never had any intention of explaining the mystery nor any idea what it was anymore than the audience did
*looks directly at the camera
"This niiga fr smhos"
>Everyone laughs
>Cute girl screams "Ridley's still got it baby"
>>213311814I've read Spaihts' script and it was pretty cool, some things I remember are that it starts with an Engineer monolith being discovered underwater, Holloway and Shaw going to Weyland's space station to meet with him, Holloway taking his helmet off because the buildings were made to terraform the planet, and the Engineer being mad because he had a chestburster inside of him. I also like Lindelof's change you mentioned but overall involving him was a terrible mistake.
>>213304350nah nah nah humans insulted him a little bit

You could literally just make a scene where someone attempts the Shaw style C-Section again, to remove an alien fetus, but the fetus is aware of what's going on and starts fighting the abortion machine and trying to claw its way back into its hosts body, tearing and ravaging him as it squirms and tears its way back into its "mother's womb"
Done. Abortion subtext countered.

>>213319427That's true! In the original script, the Engineer shouted "no homo! no homo!" in his native language
>>213319427That's not true! The Engineers are genderless. They long ago lost their sex organs, ability to experience lust, desire for sexual intercourse, and ability to reproduce in general. Which is supposed to be why they were so obsessed with the black goo since it allowed them to create life again
>>213304768the problem is it's corporate garbage so you 100% know the movie doesn't know answers to any of its mysteries either. If you read some fantasy book with mysteries you know the autistic author has thought about things he isn't revealing
>>213319651Normally this would be true, but Jon Spaihts wrote a pretty damn well thought out story while working with Ridley.
All kinds of stuff was planned out, like different factions of Engineers with different goals and an Engineer civil war, the Yutani Corporation as a competitor to Weyland and what they were up to, different human factions and conflicts between Earth and her colonies, the merger between Weyland and Yutani, the ultimate goals of the Engineer society, the existence of an actual "Prometheus"-like figure who rebelled and seeded life on Earth, etc. etc.
there's a lot that's not in the final film
