Why couldn't Ridley hire an actual science fiction writer to give him a good story with a great payoff for the engineers? Why does it have to be some doofus like Lindelof who just wants dumb mystery boxes and things like this that are so terrible?

I think it was the right decision at the very least to have the Engineer not give any answers and just go full Hulk on them. There shouldn't be some exposition or payoff of "why" humanity was created nor why he was so mad. If it wasn't handled so fucking retarded I think that payoff would have been fine.

David spoke to him in some bizarrely cobbled together Indo-European Esperanto language. In the script and deleted scenes the Engineer speaks back, but in the regular cut of the film he says nothing after David speaks to him. Going just by the film, the audience was left confused why the Engineer just went ham.

I think it was a terrible idea because there was so little to the rest of the movie. The audience came to see the movie for that payoff with the engineer. MAYBE it would have been appropriate if he had a trilogy of movie's with full story planned out and the next movie would be out in a year. But the next movie came out five years later and completely abandoned everything the audience was interested in.

And can you not understand how utterly fucking idiotically super retarded that shit it? Why are they going to Earth? Because le humans were violent. Why is violence bad? I guess it means they'll never achieve anything. Oh, but look they just flew across fucking interstellar space in a short time period, managed to find you and meet you. That's a stupendous achievement. What should he do now? Oh, that one guy hit one of the others, that's not ok! BETTER FUCKING KILL THEM ALL, INCLUDING THE INNOCENT ONE WHO GOT HIT!

Oh, and this frail old man dying of thirst is begging for a tiny sip of life water from my gigantic horde of life water? FUCK HIM. HE DON'T GET ANY MORE! IT'S ALL MINE! No, I'm not a hypocrite! I'm amazing and everything I do is right! You should worship me as a GOD!

They didnt give birth to the humans by choice, humans were a mutation the same way the aliens were. What he was watching was a horrible mutated version of himself, inferior in every way and the only thing he felt was horrid disgust.

Imagine taking a shit, forget to flush for some reason, then you go to sleep and then you're awakened by 5 walking, talking turds that yap in a language you dont understand and is stinking up the place and leaving trails of shit everwhere and now they demand to know why you've created them. You'd be pretty livid as well.

The rest of the movie is dumb as shit, but this part is pretty clear.

Engineers sought physical immortality. Druids went another way, without the biomech goo tech. It's only a bioweapon in the sense that dynamite was for mining. The goal is Bird Dog and Deacon, recreating them will make pure black goo (as we see the Druids drink) possible.

>*proceeds to rush for the toilet, the humans are unfortunately just in his way, and his attempts to move or push them out of the way are misinterpreted as hostile intent*
>*also he misjudged his own strength in regards to human fragility*

Everything thereafter is him trying to get to the toilet. He realized the toilet on his ship wasn't working after thousands of years (or the humans in their exploration sabotaged it without realizing), and so he immediately plotted a course to the nearest toilet. Then after his ship crashed, he ran over to the lifeboat ship hoping for a toilet there. Even at the end, he ran at Shaw thinking she was at the door to the toilet, only for there to be a monster inside

This thread made me put on the Furious Gods: The Making of Prometheus documentary. For some reason, partly for personal reasons as an artist, but probably also for other reasons I don't fully understand, it's one of the comfiest documentaries ever to me.
Especially the first half with the concept/pre-production phase.

For those who don't know, Prometheus wasn't really written by Lindelof. This seems like a popular misconception. Most of the story was written by Jon Spaihts, who was hired for the project when he pitched Ridley the C-Section scene. He and Ridley Scott worked together closely during the very early concept stages for the project. They had really grand ambitions, taking the original goal of an Alien prequel and coming up with this 2001: A Space Odyssey style epic about pre-visitation, ancient aliens, and so on. Damon Lindelof was brought on late in the writing phase, and it sounds like his role was to, frankly, dumb the script down to make it "more accessible for modern audiences" (although I do actually like the Engineers not speaking or have their motives explained - which *was* a Lindelof change).

Anyway, whether you like it or not Prometheus (and Alien: Covenant, and the Scott Free production Raised By Wolves - which has the stamp of Ridley's style on it), are full of interesting *ideas*
These ideas are what make Ridley's movies worth watching to me. I like to think, and more importantly for movies, I like to see things I've never seen before - like the C-Section scene.
Without ideas (and you see this with both the Bladerunner sequel and alien Romulus - and with remakes of 80's sci-fi films in general), sequels/reboots/prequels - new entries in these classic idea laden series tend to become mere rehashes of the iconic imagery we've already seen, and usually done badly and in less interesting ways.

Unless Hollywood gets people to right the ship, steer things towards good new ideas, it seems like they're just going to be stuck recycling.

True. Prometheus should have been its own non-alien series and fully planned out though. The idea that they not only already knew about aliens beforehand but that xenomorphs were humanity's sibling created by their shared engineer ancestor fundamentally ruins anything interesting about Alien which is the better movie. And you can't go through it stringing audiences along with empty mystery boxes anymore. People are fucking sick to death of being promised cool reveals only to find out that for years they never had any intention of explaining the mystery nor any idea what it was anymore than the audience did

I've read Spaihts' script and it was pretty cool, some things I remember are that it starts with an Engineer monolith being discovered underwater, Holloway and Shaw going to Weyland's space station to meet with him, Holloway taking his helmet off because the buildings were made to terraform the planet, and the Engineer being mad because he had a chestburster inside of him. I also like Lindelof's change you mentioned but overall involving him was a terrible mistake.

Counterpoint: Ridley didn't invent abortion.
You could literally just make a scene where someone attempts the Shaw style C-Section again, to remove an alien fetus, but the fetus is aware of what's going on and starts fighting the abortion machine and trying to claw its way back into its hosts body, tearing and ravaging him as it squirms and tears its way back into its "mother's womb"
Done. Abortion subtext countered.

You understand how I feel now when I hit the States. Keep in mind I'm able to to to European islands and places really easily

And when I do they know what's up ok the islands and how 90 million Americans are now protecting a child rapist and calling us liars

Trust me I totally understand the engineers feeling towards people

A vibrational thing where they're near god-status energetically/psychically speaking, and attempting to communicate with mortals, especially concepts that are "beneath them" energetically speaking - this pulls them closer to mortals

Normally this would be true, but Jon Spaihts wrote a pretty damn well thought out story while working with Ridley.
All kinds of stuff was planned out, like different factions of Engineers with different goals and an Engineer civil war, the Yutani Corporation as a competitor to Weyland and what they were up to, different human factions and conflicts between Earth and her colonies, the merger between Weyland and Yutani, the ultimate goals of the Engineer society, the existence of an actual "Prometheus"-like figure who rebelled and seeded life on Earth, etc. etc.
there's a lot that's not in the final film
