I still think the best example of cryptid turning out real was the giant squid, and it took a few well timed coincidences before researchers would even entertain looking for them. Realistically if there is a big foot primate out in north America, it would be in the best interest of both the creature and the humans to not know it exists. Myths frame them to be really intelligent, like on the verge of crossing over to human. If a small population of like 100 of these things exist I think it would make sense they avoid detection so easily.
