Everyone switched over to Smiling Friends.

It was brilliant when it started out, fresh material because you had that multiverse cynicism, like burying themselves in the yard and whatnot, there were new ideas and bizarre relationships in every story. Jerry is a fantastic character too.

With time, it began repeating itself or they couldn't match the previous ideas. But it was still alright. It really went to shit when Roiland got out, not exactly because of the voices (because the new VAs do a fairly good job, imo), it's just that Roiland used to improvise a lot, Rick and Morty had great energy between them and Justin was a good match with Harmon.

Now it lost all of its edge, Rick is kind and easy, Morty has no personality. The new seasons felt like it was a show ABOUT Rick and Morty, almost like a homage to something that it once was rather than new official canon material coming out. It's a shame really.

There are a couple of episodes this season that are unwatchable. The Snyder/Gunn episode is one of the worst cartoon episodes I've ever seen and it will age like milk.

Last season was pretty bad, but there were some good ones there.
I think they have exhausted up all their good ideas.
I also don't like how they seemed to remove all stakes. In the earlier season, it felt like they were in trouble constantly. Now they are just practically immortal it becomes unfun.

I didn't even know season eight was airing until I seen episode five pop up on the front page of the site I use to grab new releases.

I haven't finished the season yet, but I thought it was decent-ish with some fun ideas (hopping through the multiverse naturally was a fun concept). The new VAs still can't do the voices though. They should just swallow their pride and what's-his-face back.

Exactly. Roiland got kicked out over some twat suiing him, then the charges were dropped, but he still wasn't allowed to come back. Harmon killed the heart and soul of Rick & Morty, but he's too arrogant to admit he can't do it himself. And so the whole show sinks unremarkably into the swamp. Way to go, Harmon. The season had a few good episodes toward the end, but started off pretty weak.
Can imagine a lot of less devoted casual viewers being turned off and dropping it

I would probably still call this the worst season so far. Particularly annoyed that the season finale, while good, is a Rick-focused episode with almost zero Morty. It broke what seemed like a sensible routine of always having the finales do something to explore or progress the central Rick-Morty relationship

Rick and Morty ended after S3E1.

summer and beths are too boring and monotone just like new rick.
jerry is alright I guess but he isn't interesting enough of a character to carry the show.

most importantly there is no adventure. no portal hopping into unknown worlds no getting caught up in the drama of those worlds.
there is not enough permanent consequences for actions and choices. good or bad.

Fpbp. S1/2 had their finger on the pulse about struggling to find meaning and purpose beyond hedonism and contempt for those around you. After that the show was just on repeat, trying to out clever itself over and over again while never actually moving the plot or characters forward by much.

Nu-Beth is really annoying. All the characters are annoying now. The writers think being a smug dick talking about everything sarcastically is very cool. Rick, Summer, Beth, and Morty to an extent have all kind of morphed into this really insufferable archetype. There's no point to Space Beth since normie Beth thinks the exact same way she does. Even after experiencing all the crazy space shit Rick does, she hasn't reached any kind of new understanding with him. Space Beth hates Rick the exact same way normie Beth does.

First two seasons there was a tension between the kind of stories that Roiland was telling and the kind of stories Harmon was telling, and as that worked itself out we got something that was very high quality. I think that's the 'classic Rick & Morty adventures' vibe. By season 3 Harmon 'won' and it was a Harmon show with some Roiland elements. Still very good but a different vibe.

And then by season 6 it was already like good fan-fiction of itself, season 7 and 8 are more down that line.

Honestly Rick and Morty has been really disappointing. I remember when it first came out and I just thought it was so cool. Especially when they revealed Evil Morty and all the multiverse stuff. And then they just didn't bother to do anything with it in season 2, and even acted annoyed that fans wanted lore driven episodes.. don't get me wrong self-contained is great too, but personally for me the lore is the thing I love the most.
And we've gotten more with that, and some different twists. But I just feel like the show hasn't covered much more ground than it has in it's first season.

For me I'd say seasons 1-2 are pretty solid.

Seasons 3-5 are pretty mid.

And it finally starts getting good again in season 6-7. Haven't watched the new season so couldn't tell you if it's good or not.

It's extremely formulaic and bland now. It's like watching southpark without the edgyness.
Basically every episode is a monkey paw episode. A scifi concept gets out of control but don't worry it was just a silly thrill ride and it's back to normal later.
I watched total 5 minutes of the season to see how bad it was. Skipped through every episode because it was unwatchable garbage.
It's nothing without the wife beater.
