The series doesn't become consistent and good until 4 onwards. 4 is still the best though others after it sometimes come close to it.
2 and 3 are the worst, 2 has a weird style that feels extremely out of place compared to all the others, 3 is JJ Abrams standard junk directing and editing where it moves at a fast pace to try and hide how bad it all is

Rogue nation is the best one, but you should watch ghost protocol before for a proper character introduction

1 and 3 are actually the best. 4 is a followup to 3 and is literally about Michelle Monaghan's character "dying" then coming back to life. Nothing else happens in the movie, do you even remember the villain? I don't. 5 through whatever are just boring, McQuarrie is a bad director and writer.

That's a secondary plot point at best

Ghost Protocol is easily the best after the 1st, it has a sense of motion and timing that none of the other movies have Brad Bird's direction really shines

Ghost Protocol-Rogue Nation-Fallout are all great.

Dead Reckoning was a massive disappointment

They're all fun. A bit samey from 4 onwards but that's ok. 8 is great btw, fuck the haters. It's Ethan Hunt vs. the Internet: the Movie. I love the tension between digital, analogic and biologic with which the movie plays throughout. Radio-only submarines, morse code, pen and paper as old technologies cunningly wielded against an ever ecroaching, omnipresent Entity-infested internet. The DIY heart surgery on that bloke at the end as they fiddle with the guts of the the machine on which the world's fate hangs. &c. Interesting new aproaches within the familiar confines of the M:I formula.

6 (aka Fallout) is by far the best one. But it's a straight sequel to 5 (which is pretty good by itself), so start with 5.

I just couldn't get over all of the sequels being too futuristic in tech. The original one, portable 3d printer faces aside, felt the most grounded.
