Because they are made for them? Comic book movies are certainly not made for comic book fans, otherwise they would be more faithful to the source materials since those audiences are super anal about every little detail.

The movies are made for the general audiences that are invested on the cinematographic universes.

According to Snyder, Stabler's character and Faora survived and learned to cooperate in another dimension, becoming a couple and having babies. Stabler said, so, though.

I actually found the Zod character interesting and difficult to grasp BECAUSE he's such a cunt

He could have won very easily if he stopped being a cunt for five seconds. In fact, he could have even won very easily if he merely pretended to stop being a cunt for five seconds. But somehow being a cunt was more important to him than winning, than surviving. And the movie tells us this is supposed to be genetic, that he's enslaved to his obligation to be a cunt, that every Kryptonian was except for Kal-El.

It reminds me of Willem Dafeo's character in The Lighthouse, the person who just keeps making things worse even when you hope he might stop for just a moment.

That's what the CGI ghost of Jor El pretty much told Superman. Kal was born the natural way, and that meant he was free to make his own choices. He had free will. So he was the best they had to offer, maybe in millennia.
Meanwhile all the other kryptonians were designer babies. They were essentially drones, including Jor himself. That's why nothing good would come from bringing the other kryptonians back. They'd just ruin any other planet they found themselves in.

"Krypton had its chance" and all that. Pretty fatalistic for a capeshit movie.

He was meant to be a very obscure from DC called The Guardian.
In the comics he was a cop from Metropolis that was experimented by Cadmus and became a small time hero in poorest parts of Metropolis.

In the Donner-verse he was a moustache twirling villain. In this one he was trying to preserve his people since he was genetically engineered to do that and he understandably lost his shit when it didn't work out.
