From what I can gather, I think he fucked up marrying his publicist and then divorcing her. Not only is she gonna bad mouth him to anyone in the industry she can from now on, he probably had to pay alimony, resulting in him taking a lot more roles to pay. Add in another marriage and some kids and another divorce and you get a muddy career.

He fell in love quite hard with Helen Mirren on O Lucky Man. He thought Stanley Kubrick was going to be his BBF after Clockwork Orange and when Kubrick moved on with his projects, Malc trash-talked him numerous times publicly in the following years. In one youtube vid taken by a fan at a convention, he appears to be somehat high on cocaine.
So perhaps for all his talent, a lack of emotional maturity prevented him from landing a better career.

Americans will never understand it but Britfag actors will in most cases have mentally separated theatre from film acting. They see one as a passion and the other as a paycheck. Brian Cox does Shakespare for the National Theatre and stuff on Broadway, then shows up to the film set to do absolute bottom of the barrel slop to fund that his lifestyle.

I don't think "being the best part of a bad movie" is a particularly embarrassing career path. You end up with "Of course the movie was trash but _____ was pretty great as always"

I have literally never watched a movie and thought "Man, Malcolm McDowell sucked in that"

Considering how many obviously trash performances in trash movies there are, there's a certain honor in guys like pic related who always bring it to the table no matter how low brow the material is.

He's a main cast member on this terrible Canadian show called Son of a Critch and I was shocked learning it was him. He's a very well-respected actor that could probably work with any director he wants, so I would assume he's just taking roles for the experience rather than worry about tailoring his career.

Anyways, the most interesting fact about him in my opinion is that he's the uncle to Alexander Siddig, who of course played Bashir.
