Had a family member who was a retired cop. He said at least twice a month he responded to car crash calls involving casualties. Every time there was at least one car involved that had empty bottles or cans inside. He said the thing that sickened him the most about it was the drunk was usually the only one to walk away from the crashes

People used to. The cops used to confiscate your bottle and tell you to go home.
Now you are arrested, your vehicle is impounded in some ghetto lot, gets broken into and you have to pay $400 to get it out, you go to jail, have court dates, have court fees and fines, lose your license, can't get to work, have your vehicle repo'd because you can't get to work and you can't pay your bills. And then you can't afford the insurance on your license and you can't afford your new car insurance rates. And you can't afford the fucking breathalyzer you must pay to install in your new vehicle, and pay to calibrate monthly. And you can't afford a vehicle in the first place.
You ruin your fucking life.
