>imax is just the regular 4:3 aspect ratio that existed for decades with televisions and computer monitors
Widescreen was a mistake.

When the directors make the movie, are they focusing on what it would look like in the smaller format? Since thats what will be seen 99.999% of the time? And the IMAX version is like the leftovers? That would be weird.

No point on having the largest, highest fidelity format if you're gonna project that shit.

Human eyes see in an aspect ratio of 4:3. Letterbox does make things look dramatic and wide. it has a kind of peripheral quality of immersion. I'm also a fan of 3D which isnt for everyone

It's more esoteric than that. The DUNC heighliner is one ship in two places simultaneously and the tube itself acts as a wormhole so a transport can fly through its ass from the original location and exit its mouth in the destination location.

Rather than the Lynch Dune version that has transports dock inside then folds space going from one location to the next to take the transports to the destination.
