The only good part of this movie is the hilarious scenes with the racist travel agent. Other than that it's just a love letter to being raised Jewish.

it completely lacks the good acting that some of his films are known for, and the writing doesn't sell it either, you have to really buy into the gay teenage romance (with a mid 20s chick) the direction doesnt even impress either, supposed to be this big 70s vibe film but shit Once Upon a Time in Hollywood did much better with the 60s

A 15-year-old boy can fuck a grown woman and not be traumatized in the least by it. It's such an insane concept to believe otherwise. Anyway, this is a source of conflict in the movie anyway.

There Will Be Blood, Phantom Thread

I really feel like he was aping Tarantino with Boogie Nights. There are occasional flashes of brilliance but it's almost as though he set out to make a "cult classic", and that's just not how that works.

the art on this is so much better though. you can tell the movie poster artist wasn't classically trained at all, which I think is required for this type of illustration

I like the scene where Alana tries to talk down to Gary because she's become the '70s equivalent of politically woke and he just totally shuts her down:
>You don't even know what's going on in the world. You think that the world revolves around Gary Valentine and whatever stupid shit you come up with.
>It does.
>No it doesn't.
>Yes, it does.

Gay politician scene and Sean Penn scene are both there to make Alana realize the guys she's crushing on while denying her love for Gary are lame af. I like Sean Penn in this movie, particularly when he tells her she looks like Grace Kelly lol.

He was aping Scorsese, Boogie Nights is literally just Goodfellas with pornstars instead of mobsters, like carbon-copied themes, structure and style, with the ending of Raging Bull tacked on

It's probably the best of the Goodfellas ripoffs though, lots of filmmakers tried to rip it off and didn't do it nearly this well. Hell even Scorsese himself didn't rip it off quite as well with Wolf of Wall Street
