Coppola returned the favor by raising additional funding for American Graffiti and pressuring the studio to release it though. He visited them and offered to outright buy the movie. Of course he didn't have the money but studio had no faith in the project and they were just sitting on it. It wasn't even sure if it ever sees the light of day, as it was a low budget production and they were focusing on minimizing their expected losses. Coppola asked how much American Graffiti cost them so far and said he's willing to compensate them in exchange for the movie itself. They won't make profit on it but they won't have losses either. That's what eventually got the gears going: if the director of the Godfather sees this potential in your movie then who are you to deny a release date from it?
