College costs a mint and filters or indebts the vast majority of people that go through it now. White collar jobs are collapsing and getting more competitive due to outsourcing and downsizing, and on top of that food and housing are prohibitively expensive even if you're a rentie. Blue collar/tradie stuff is seeing a renaissance but again you have cost of living being a serious issue while it also puts more of a toll on your physical health.
It's really just an apocalyptic job market/economy if you're young and just starting out. That's why I plan on going the academic route unless somebody picks up one of my screenplays.

For the military, my plan was to become a French Foreign Legionnaire. I spent two years physically training for it and studying French, and really wanted to commit myself to it given I come from a military family whose history goes back to the middle ages and ends after Vietnam. I went there last year to join, and after 2.5 weeks they decided they didn't want me.
So then I decided to go the business route, because I thought I had an opportunity in a lakeside Minnesota tourist town I spent a lot of time in growing up. The old, historical, three theater cinema there had been closed down since COVID, so I managed to get into contact with the guy who owned the property to see what the deal was. After a while of talking to him, it seemed like he was interested in reopening the place and wanted me to work there given I knew the area well and had an interest in film. So I got a job at a local theater chain to get experience in the industry.
But after several months working there, the guy just kept giving me the same canned responses and implied he didn't give a shit about me or the theater, so that fell apart as quick as it popped up despite looking promising.
So here I am now, doing my wagie job and saving up before I head back to school.
