By Hollywood movie standards, it's a pretty realistic depiction of a volcanic eruption and it doesn't introduce any cheesy plotline depicting the volcano as a "villain" to be "defeated", just a force of nature to be survived. Compare Volcano, the other 1997 volcano film, which does all that as well as dispensing with any sort of connection to reality. It's easy to come up with a silly movie threat, it's more engaging to show a fairly realistic natural force and show characters trying to survive it.

There's no ridiculous melodrama for starters, and the volcanic eruption is pretty realistic instead of completely silly.

Yeah cold is great and all until the 10th day in a row I find myself digging my car out of snow, hydroplaning all the way to work and then back, only to get warm for a few hours before repeating it all over again.

I've grown to appreciate heat a lot more, so long as it's not too humid. Only pasty neets who snuggle up next to a space heater while playing video games in their mom's basement enjoy the cold after a certain point.

Mountains disrupt air currents causing wild changes in temperature. At this proximity you are also losing hours of daylight.
Large bodies of water hold temperature.
There is only a small section of California that meets these criteria.

Cold means women never dress in anything attractive and people always isolate themselves inside.
Not dying becomes a major expense, which affects the cost of everything else as other people also need to pay it.
I know you don't understand this but going outside becomes actually physically painful and immediately life threatening on the order of minutes.
There are no parks or beaches or outside malls where people gather because they would be unuseable most of the year.
To mitigate the danger of driving in the cold, chemicals are used on roads which destroy vehicles.
Nothing grows here so food is all imported, making it poor quality and expensive.
Sunlight hours are greatly limited, even when the sun is out it is not hot enough to burn off the permanent grey haze in the sky.
Summer is not hot long enough to warm bodies of water, so they are still too cold to enjoy swimming in.

Geographically, Canada is the worst place on earth that people live. The only thing it had in its favor was white people and that is over. The people still coming here are the stupidest on earth.

Disaster movies usually use the disaster as a trojan horse for boring character drama that the only ending they can come up with for is character(s) dies.
The Day After Tomorrow is more fun than others. Everything in it is so completely retarded that you don't take it seriously.

Deep Impact > Armageddon
Dante's Peak > Volcano

28 Days Later, Cloverfield, Interstellar, Knowing, Melancholia, Seeking a Friend for the End of the World, The Stand 1994, Titanic, Twister, Waterworld
